Ryan was well-known for his contagious energy and unwavering devotion to his family and the Waltham football team in addition to his physical prowess. Ryan played both the guard and defensive end positions for the Waltham High School boys varsity football team, where he was an active participant. His performances on the field demonstrated his dedication to the game and his team. In order to become the best athlete he could be, Ryan was constantly challenging himself. His leadership, tenacity, and desire impressed his coaches and teammates. Younger athletes looked up to him as a role model because of his competitive attitude and commitment to perfection.

Beyond his athletic achievements, Ryan had a strong sense of community; his family was a mainstay of the Waltham region. He was the great-grandson of Ruth L. (Dahlin) Lovequist, who lived in Waltham for a long period and died in 2021. The family’s longstanding ties to the area are highlighted in Ruth’s obituary, which also lovingly mentions her great-grandchildren, John Shread and Ryan Shread.
Ryan’s family had strong roots in Waltham, and it was clear from his actions and dedication that he carried on the tradition of community involvement that had been passed down to him.
