Tragic Loss in Yenda: Community Calls for Urgent Rail Safety Reforms After Ethan Griffiths’ Death
Yenda, NSW – The tragic loss of 17-year-old Ethan Griffiths in a devastating collision with a train at a level crossing on September 2, 2024, continues to send shockwaves through the community. Six months after the heartbreaking incident, Ethan’s mother, Jaime Griffiths, is determined to turn her pain into purpose by advocating for improved rail crossing safety measures.
Ethan, a bright and beloved young man with dreams of becoming a mechanic, was on his way home when his vehicle was struck by an oncoming freight train at an unguarded crossing. His untimely passing has left a deep void in the lives of his family and friends, while also reigniting concerns over railway safety in the region.
In response to this tragedy, Griffith City Council has launched a community-wide awareness campaign aimed at educating residents on the dangers of level crossings and the importance of heightened caution when crossing railway tracks. Given the city’s status as a major food-producing hub, heavy freight train and truck traffic pose significant risks to drivers and pedestrians alike.
The campaign includes:
-
Public education initiatives to raise awareness about rail safety and the consequences of neglecting crossing signals.
-
Increased signage and warning systems at known high-risk crossings to alert motorists and pedestrians.
-
Collaboration with state and federal agencies to explore possible infrastructure improvements, such as boom gates and flashing lights at unprotected crossings.
Jaime Griffiths, speaking at a recent community gathering, urged residents and officials to take this issue seriously. “No parent should have to endure what my family has gone through. If better safety measures can save just one life, then we have to act now,” she said, her voice filled with grief and determination.
The Griffith City Council has expressed its commitment to working with transport authorities and local leaders to improve safety measures and prevent further tragedies. Meanwhile, the community has rallied behind Jaime, offering their support and pledging to push for change.
As Yenda continues to mourn the loss of Ethan, his family hopes his legacy will serve as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for rail safety improvements—so that no other family will have to suffer the same devastating loss.
