Laurel, MS – The community of Laurel, Mississippi, is mourning the loss of Jackie Carl Russell, a beloved father, grandfather, and faithful servant, who passed away peacefully at the age of 75 on Monday, April 7, 2025. Russell’s death marks the end of a life well-lived, marked by dedication to his family, church, and the greater Laurel community.

Jackie Russell, known to many simply as “Jack,” was a pillar of strength, love, and faith. His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew him. Surrounded by his loved ones, Jackie was called to his Heavenly home to be with Jesus, a testament to the faith and hope that guided him throughout his life.

A Life Rooted in Faith and Service

Born and raised in Laurel, Jackie spent his entire life in the area, where he built a strong reputation as a man of faith and integrity. A longtime member of First Baptist Church of Laurel, he was known for his unwavering commitment to his Christian beliefs and his active role in church activities. Jackie often volunteered at church events, served as a deacon, and was deeply involved in helping those in need within the community.

“Jackie was the kind of man who always had a word of encouragement, a listening ear, and a helping hand,” said Pastor Robert Thompson of First Baptist Church. “His faith was evident in everything he did. Whether it was volunteering for community events or helping his neighbors, Jackie embodied what it means to live a life of service. He was truly a shining example of Christ’s love.”

Family and Legacy

Jackie is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Russell, of 52 years, as well as their two children, Shannon Russell and Michael Russell, along with four grandchildren. Known for his love and dedication to his family, Jackie was a proud father and grandfather. His family recalls his nurturing spirit, his kind heart, and his playful nature as a grandfather, who loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren.

“My dad was my hero,” said Shannon Russell, Jackie’s daughter. “He taught me everything I know about being a good person, about having integrity, and about putting your faith first. He was always there for us, no matter what. I know that he is now in a better place, but it still doesn’t make it any easier to say goodbye.”

Friends and family often described Jackie as a man who was quick to offer help and had a smile that could light up any room. He enjoyed spending his free time outdoors, fishing with his grandchildren, and working on projects around the house. He was also known for his love of gardening, tending to a beautiful garden that was the pride of his home.

A Loving Community Member

Beyond his family and church commitments, Jackie made significant contributions to the Laurel community through his work and volunteer efforts. He spent many years working in the local manufacturing industry, and after retiring, he continued to stay active by volunteering with local organizations such as the Laurel Food Pantry and Habitat for Humanity. His dedication to his community was always evident, as he found fulfillment in helping others and giving back.

“Jackie Russell’s impact on our community cannot be overstated,” said Mayor Carla Walker of Laurel. “His commitment to serving others was remarkable. Whether it was working with youth programs or helping seniors with home repairs, Jackie made a difference. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on in all the lives he touched.”

A Celebration of Life

The family has announced that a memorial service to honor Jackie Russell’s life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Laurel. The service will be open to the public, and friends and family are encouraged to attend to pay their respects and celebrate the life of this extraordinary man. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Laurel Food Pantry or Habitat for Humanity in memory of Jackie’s lifelong commitment to helping others.

“We take comfort in knowing that my dad is now with Jesus,” said Michael Russell, Jackie’s son. “He lived a life of faith, kindness, and service, and we are proud to call him our father. We’ll continue to honor his legacy and carry his lessons with us every day.”

As the community of Laurel comes together to mourn Jackie’s passing, they also celebrate the life he lived—a life defined by love, faith, and a profound sense of duty to others. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him, and his example will continue to inspire future generations.
