It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share the sudden and unexpected passing of Suresh Unni, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Suresh passed away on the night of Wednesday, April 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, intellect, laughter, and deep devotion to his family and community. He was 51 years old.
The funeral services for Suresh Unni will be held on Saturday, April 5, at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, Indiana. Visitation is scheduled from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, followed by eulogies from 5:00 to 5:30 PM, and a Puja ceremony from 5:30 to 6:00 PM. Family, friends, and all those whose lives Suresh touched are invited to attend and pay their respects.
Born and raised in northwest Indiana, Suresh graduated from Andrean High School, and went on to earn both his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in Social Work from Loyola University. He built an impactful career as a therapist and professor, where his compassion, empathy, and brilliance left lasting impressions on students and clients alike. Suresh was deeply committed to the mental and emotional well-being of others and remained a lifelong learner, most recently becoming certified in Chinese medicine, a testament to his curiosity and holistic approach to healing.
Outside of his professional life, Suresh was an athlete, musician, and entertainer. A lifelong sports fan, he rooted enthusiastically for Chicago teams and looked forward to Shark Week every year with childlike excitement. He was known for his sense of humor, especially his love for dad jokes, and could light up any room with his smile and presence. A gifted guitar player, a movie buff, and a dedicated foodie, Suresh made every moment with loved ones meaningful—whether through deep conversation, a hearty laugh, or simply over-ordering at his favorite restaurants just to share more with everyone at the table.
Suresh’s love for his family was his greatest strength. He is survived by his devoted wife Angela, and their cherished daughter, Amaya, with whom he shared endless moments of joy, discovery, and unconditional love. Angela, reflecting on their 20 years together, expressed both the heartbreak and the immense gratitude of having shared such meaningful years with Suresh.
He is also survived by his loving parents, Ramakrishnan and Sarala Unni; his brother, Ramesh Unni (Sajil); his nephew, Dheven Unni; his nieces, Asha and Sahana Unni; and a large circle of cousins, in-laws, friends, and colleagues, each of whom knew Suresh as someone truly special. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Santosh Unni, whose memory he carried with him always.
Suresh’s sudden departure leaves a deep void, but his vibrant spirit will live on in the stories, laughter, and memories shared by those who loved him.
Angela has invited anyone who would like to share a personal memory of Suresh (“Sesh”) to reach out to her. She finds comfort in hearing about how he touched the lives of others. She can be reached at 773-456-9080.
As we gather in remembrance, let us honor the beautiful life of Suresh Unni—a man whose kindness, warmth, intellect, and humor made the world a better place. May he rest in peace, and may his family find strength in the love he left behind.
