Off-Duty Bexar County Constable Recovering After Collision with Amazon 18-Wheeler on I-35 South as Authorities Release New Details on Shocking Highway Crash
SAN ANTONIO, TX — Authorities have released new information surrounding a violent crash that occurred on I-35 South earlier this week, involving an off-duty Bexar County Precinct 2 constable and an Amazon 18-wheeler. The collision, which sent shockwaves through the local law enforcement and trucking communities, unfolded during evening rush hour and left both vehicles heavily damaged — with one erupting in flames.
The crash happened near the Loop 410 interchange in south San Antonio. According to San Antonio Police Department investigators, the Amazon semi-truck was merging onto I-35 South when it collided with a personal vehicle driven by the off-duty constable. The impact caused the constable’s SUV to lose control and slam into a concrete barrier, where it burst into flames. Miraculously, the officer was able to escape the fiery wreck with the assistance of a nearby motorist who rushed in to help.
Officials now say that the constable, whose name has not yet been released, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He is currently recovering in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. His family issued a statement thanking first responders and the good Samaritan for their heroic efforts.
“This could have ended very differently,” said Bexar County Constable Leticia Vasquez. “We are grateful for the bravery of those who stepped in to help and for the prayers from our community.”
The Amazon truck driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators. No citations or charges have been filed at this time, as the investigation into the cause of the crash continues. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and conducting interviews to determine whether speed, driver fatigue, or mechanical failure may have played a role.
Traffic on I-35 South was brought to a standstill for several hours while emergency crews worked to clear the scene and ensure there was no lingering fire risk. The charred remains of the constable’s vehicle serve as a stark reminder of how quickly a routine drive can become life-threatening.
As the community rallies around the injured officer, many are calling for renewed awareness around the dangers of high-speed merges involving commercial vehicles. The Texas Department of Public Safety has been asked to assist in evaluating the crash data to assess whether safety recommendations or roadway design changes are warranted.
The constable’s office stated that while he is eager to return to duty, his focus remains on healing and spending time with family. Updates on his condition will be released as they become available.
