Terrifying Hit-and-Run on I-10: San Antonio Couple Lucky to Survive After 18-Wheeler Strikes Their Vehicle and Fleeing the Scene

SAN ANTONIO, TX – April 9, 2025 — A San Antonio couple is counting their blessings after narrowly escaping death in a terrifying hit-and-run incident on Interstate 10 early Tuesday morning. The couple, who were traveling eastbound on I-10, had their lives turned upside down when an 18-wheeler struck their vehicle before fleeing the scene. The incident, which occurred just before 5:30 a.m., left the couple shaken, but miraculously, they both survived with only minor injuries. Authorities are now working to track down the driver of the big rig involved in the crash.

A Shocking Encounter

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, was driving their Chevrolet Silverado east on I-10 when the horrifying collision took place. According to the woman, who was behind the wheel at the time, they were traveling through the northwest side of San Antonio when they noticed a large truck moving erratically in their rearview mirror.

“We saw the truck swerving in and out of lanes, but we didn’t think much of it at first. Then, it just came out of nowhere,” the woman said. “It hit us hard from behind, and we spun out of control. It felt like the world was turning upside down.”

The impact sent the Silverado spinning across multiple lanes, narrowly missing several other vehicles, before finally coming to a stop on the shoulder of the highway. The truck, however, did not stop. Instead, the driver of the 18-wheeler sped away, leaving the couple stranded on the side of the road, shaken and terrified.

“It was surreal,” said the woman. “I was just trying to get us to safety, but it was like the truck just vanished. We couldn’t believe it.”

The Aftermath and Response

Despite the shock and panic, the couple managed to call 911. San Antonio Police and paramedics arrived at the scene within minutes, finding the Silverado severely damaged but still intact. The couple was treated at the scene for minor injuries, including cuts and bruises. However, their emotional distress was evident, as both were visibly shaken from the frightening ordeal.

“I just kept thinking, ‘What if we hadn’t been able to regain control of the truck? What if there had been more cars around us?’” the man said. “We’re lucky to be alive.”

Law enforcement quickly began scouring the highway for any signs of the 18-wheeler involved in the hit-and-run. Several surveillance cameras from nearby businesses and toll booths along I-10 may provide clues to the truck’s whereabouts. Authorities believe the truck was a white or light-colored 18-wheeler with distinctive markings on the trailer, but the driver was not immediately identified.

Witnesses Urged to Come Forward

San Antonio Police have asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who might have information about the whereabouts of the truck to contact the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). Investigators are reviewing traffic camera footage and other evidence in hopes of identifying the vehicle and tracking down the driver responsible for the crash.

“We’re doing everything we can to find the driver who fled the scene,” said Sgt. Elizabeth Garcia of SAPD’s Traffic Division. “Hit-and-run accidents like this are devastating, and we want to bring the person responsible to justice.”

Witnesses who were traveling in the area of I-10 near the Callaghan Road exit around the time of the incident are encouraged to contact the police. Investigators are also urging any truckers or trucking companies with information to come forward.

A Growing Concern Over Trucking Safety

The terrifying incident has once again brought attention to safety concerns involving large trucks on San Antonio’s highways. The area where the collision occurred is a heavily traveled stretch of Interstate 10, which serves as a major corridor for freight transportation throughout Texas.

“I drive this highway every day for work,” said Carlos Mendoza, a local truck driver. “It’s scary to think about what could have happened if they had lost control for even a second longer. There are so many trucks on the road, and accidents like this are becoming too common.”

San Antonio residents have voiced concerns about truck driver behavior, especially in the early morning hours when fatigue and distraction can play a role in crashes. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched several initiatives in recent years to improve truck safety and reduce collisions, but many feel more needs to be done.

“We need better regulations for truck drivers and stricter enforcement of traffic laws,” said Ana Morales, a local safety advocate. “Too many lives are being put at risk.”

The Couple’s Gratitude and Frustration

While the couple is relieved to have escaped the accident with only minor injuries, they are left with lingering questions and frustration. Despite being the victims of a crime, they are still awaiting answers and hoping for justice.

“We don’t want anything more than for the person responsible to be held accountable,” said the man. “It’s not just about us. There could have been others involved. They could have killed someone.”

As the investigation continues, the couple is focusing on the gratitude they feel for their survival, thankful that they were able to walk away from what could have been a fatal crash. They’re also speaking out, hoping to raise awareness about the dangers posed by reckless truck drivers and the urgent need for better safety on the roads.

“We’re just lucky,” the woman said. “But so many people aren’t. I hope this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
