Two Suspects Arrested After Fatal Shooting of U.S. Army Servicemember Colby Scheffler in New Orleans; Investigators Say Victim Was Targeted in Violent Robbery Involving Bear Spray and Gunfire

NEW ORLEANS, LA — April 8, 2025 — A tragic act of violence in New Orleans has left a promising young servicemember dead and a community grieving. Colby Scheffler, a 20-year-old member of the U.S. Army and recent graduate of Chalmette High School, was fatally shot early Sunday morning in what authorities are calling a targeted attack. Two young men are now facing murder charges in connection with the crime.

A Young Life Cut Short

Colby Scheffler had recently returned home from active duty when his life was senselessly cut short. He was known by family and friends as a kind-hearted, intelligent young man who had a bright future ahead of him. Michelle Alonzo, a close family friend, described Colby as someone who “could light up any room” and was “like another son” to her family. His decision to join the Army after high school reflected his dedication, discipline, and desire to serve others.

“He was everything a parent would want in a child,” Alonzo said, holding back tears. “He was smart, funny, loyal—and now he’s gone.”

The Shooting

The deadly shooting took place around 2:49 a.m. on Sunday, April 6, in the Carrollton area of New Orleans, near the intersection of Audubon and Jeanette streets. According to the New Orleans Police Department, Scheffler and two other individuals were driving along Willow Street when they were ambushed. Colby was found shot in the driver’s seat of the car, which had crashed into several parked vehicles before coming to a stop against a fence.

Another passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while the third occupant was unharmed. Police believe the group was targeted as part of a robbery attempt.

Arrests and Charges

On Monday, authorities arrested 18-year-old Julian Vicknair and 19-year-old Harry Darby in Violet, Louisiana. The arrests were made with assistance from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office. Both suspects are now charged with second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder.

According to the arrest affidavit, investigators say Vicknair allegedly sprayed bear mace into the victims’ vehicle to disable them before an armed accomplice approached and opened fire. Colby was struck in the back and died at the scene.

Both suspects appeared in court Tuesday, where prosecutors requested a $10 million bond for each. The judge ultimately set bond at $1.5 million each. If they post bond, the suspects will be required to wear ankle monitors, remain under 24-hour house arrest, and are prohibited from contacting the surviving victim.

Community Mourning and Outrage

News of Scheffler’s death has rippled across the New Orleans metro area, especially in Chalmette, where he grew up and graduated from high school. Local veterans’ groups, neighbors, and classmates have expressed outrage and sadness, many calling for justice and greater attention to gun violence in the city.

A candlelight vigil is being planned in Colby’s memory later this week in Chalmette. “We’re not going to let his name be forgotten,” said one former teacher. “He deserved so much more. His life was just beginning.”
