Pennsylvania Man Arrested for Allegedly Plotting Mass Shooting at State College High School to Mark 26th Anniversary of Columbine Tragedy; Police Foil Chilling Attack Involving Hit List, Bomb Plans, and Targeted Student Ambush
State College, PA – April 13, 2025
A disturbing and deeply troubling plot has been foiled in central Pennsylvania after authorities arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly planning a mass school shooting intended to coincide with the anniversary of one of the nation’s most infamous school massacres.
Braeden Phillips, of Milroy, Pennsylvania, is accused of orchestrating a violent attack on State College Area High School, with plans to carry out the assault on April 21, just one day after the 26th anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre. According to police, Phillips had drawn up detailed plans, including a hit list and a strategy to target a crowded staircase inside the school to maximize casualties.
Authorities say he also intended to plant explosive devices in school bathrooms, echoing tactics used in the 1999 Columbine attack.
The alarming plot was uncovered thanks to a tip from a Centre County youth shelter, where Phillips was reportedly staying. A fellow resident informed staff about Phillips’ intentions, prompting immediate notification to law enforcement. Investigators swiftly acted on the tip, recovering evidence that corroborated the suspect’s plans, including communications outlining the intended attack.
Phillips has been charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and related offenses. He is currently being held without bail at the Centre County Correctional Facility. Officials have not indicated whether anyone else is believed to be involved.
In response to the credible threat, the State College Area School District has implemented heightened security protocols, including an increased police presence and the use of metal detectors on campus. School officials have also emphasized the importance of mental health resources and threat prevention initiatives within the district.
“We are grateful for the quick action of the individual who reported this, and for the law enforcement officers who worked swiftly to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” said a statement from the school district.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not ruled out additional charges. The incident has once again raised concerns about school safety and the enduring influence of the Columbine tragedy, even more than two decades later.
