Tragic Shooting in Fort Wayne Leaves One Man Dead and Another Critically Injured as Police Launch Intense Investigation into Early Morning Gunfire Near Apartment Complex
FORT WAYNE, IN — The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) is actively investigating a deadly shooting that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 13, 2025, leaving one man dead and another critically injured. The incident unfolded on the city’s northeast side, shaking a normally quiet neighborhood and prompting a swift police response.
According to authorities, officers were dispatched to the area of the 1700 block of Reed Road just after 2:00 a.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire. Upon arrival, police discovered two adult male victims with gunshot wounds lying near the entrance of an apartment complex. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, while the second was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. His identity and current status have not yet been publicly released.
The deceased victim has not been formally identified pending notification of next of kin, but neighbors say he was a familiar face in the community. Residents reported hearing multiple gunshots followed by the sound of screeching tires as a vehicle sped away from the scene. “It was chaos,” said one witness who asked to remain anonymous. “I looked out and saw someone lying on the ground. People were screaming—it was terrifying.”
Detectives with FWPD’s Homicide Unit were called to the scene to begin a comprehensive investigation. They spent several hours collecting evidence, interviewing potential witnesses, and reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding buildings. At this time, no arrests have been made, and police have not confirmed a motive for the shooting. Investigators believe it may have stemmed from an altercation, but they are working to piece together the exact sequence of events.
The area was cordoned off until late Saturday morning as officers combed through the scene for clues. Crime scene technicians were seen placing evidence markers and examining shell casings found at the location.
The deadly incident adds to a troubling rise in gun violence in Fort Wayne this year. City leaders and community advocates have repeatedly urged residents to come forward with information and help break the cycle of violence. “This is another tragic reminder of how senseless violence can tear families apart and devastate communities,” said Fort Wayne Police Chief Steve Reed in a statement. “We are committed to finding those responsible and holding them accountable.”
FWPD is urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact the department or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 260-436-STOP (7867). Tips can also be submitted online.
As the investigation continues, the Fort Wayne community mourns the loss of another life and prays for the recovery of the injured survivor. A vigil is being planned by local residents in the coming days to honor the victims and call for peace.
