Springdale Mourns the Loss of Beloved Former Assistant Basketball Coach Matthew “Matt” Williams, Killed in Tragic Car Accident

Springdale, AR — April 16, 2025 — The Springdale community is grappling with immense sorrow following the tragic and untimely death of Matthew “Matt” Williams, the former assistant coach for the Springdale High School Bulldogs basketball team, who passed away in a car accident on Saturday, April 12, 2025. He was a respected coach, mentor, and friend whose legacy transcended the game of basketball and left a lasting impression on generations of student-athletes.

According to early reports, the fatal accident occurred just outside of Springdale when Matt’s vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle collision. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Williams was pronounced dead at the scene. Local authorities have not yet released full details regarding the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation.

Matt Williams was just 38 years old.

News of his sudden passing sent a wave of grief through the Springdale community, particularly among those involved in the school’s athletics programs. Former players, colleagues, parents, and students have since come forward to honor the man many referred to as “Coach Matt”—a passionate educator who devoted countless hours to mentoring young athletes both on and off the court.

Williams served as an assistant coach for the Springdale Bulldogs for over a decade and was instrumental in helping shape the program into one of the most respected in the region. Known for his strategic mind, relentless work ethic, and unwavering support for his players, Williams was more than a coach—he was a role model.

“He poured everything he had into these kids,” said Coach Larry Phelps, the Bulldogs’ head coach and longtime friend of Williams. “He cared about the game, sure, but he cared even more about shaping these young men into good people. He believed in them, pushed them, and was always there when they needed someone to believe in them. I don’t know how we’re going to move forward without him.”

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Matt was a beloved figure in the classroom and in the community. He taught health and physical education at Springdale High School and was often the first to volunteer for school functions, charity drives, and mentorship programs. Students recalled his sense of humor, easygoing demeanor, and ability to lift people up during their hardest days.

“He made school a place I wanted to be,” said former player DeShawn Clark, now a freshman in college. “Coach Matt would come in early, stay late, help with homework, and talk about life. He didn’t just teach us how to win games—he taught us how to be men.”

Throughout his career, Williams helped lead the Bulldogs to numerous district championships and state playoff appearances. He was particularly proud of developing players who went on to succeed in college athletics and always emphasized character as much as performance.

His influence extended far beyond wins and losses.

Williams’ death has also sparked an outpouring of support on social media, with tributes flooding in from former students, parents, fellow coaches, and even rival schools. Many described him as “irreplaceable,” “a real one,” and “the heart of Springdale athletics.”

The Springdale School District released a statement on Sunday acknowledging the tremendous loss:
“We are heartbroken to confirm the passing of Matthew Williams, former assistant basketball coach and educator. Matt was a shining example of dedication, compassion, and leadership. His positive impact on our students and staff is immeasurable. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and the entire Springdale community.”

Plans for a public memorial are currently underway, with the school district coordinating with Williams’ family to honor his life and legacy. A candlelight vigil will be held at the Springdale High School gymnasium this Friday evening, where hundreds are expected to gather and celebrate the life of a man who gave so much to others.

In lieu of flowers, the Williams family has asked that donations be made to the Matt Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will support local student-athletes pursuing higher education—a reflection of Matt’s passion for youth development and his lifelong commitment to education.

Matt is survived by his wife Danielle Williams, and their two young children, Isaac (8) and Lily (5). He also leaves behind his parents, siblings, and a vast extended family of players, students, and friends who considered him one of their own.

For those who knew him, Matt Williams’ memory will live on in every student he mentored, every player he coached, and every person he inspired with his selflessness, strength, and love for the game. His sudden passing is a tremendous loss, but his legacy of leadership, compassion, and community will never be forgotten.
