Two Men Killed in Devastating Head-On Collision Late Friday Night in West Phoenix; Investigation Underway

PHOENIX, AZ — A quiet Friday night in West Phoenix turned tragic after a violent two-vehicle crash claimed the lives of two men in what authorities are calling a head-on collision with devastating consequences. The fatal accident occurred shortly before 10:30 p.m. on April 18, near the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Orangewood Avenue—a heavily traveled corridor in the western part of the city.

The Phoenix Police Department responded swiftly to the scene following several 911 calls reporting a serious crash. Upon arrival, officers and emergency medical personnel discovered two heavily damaged vehicles and both drivers inside suffering from critical injuries. Despite efforts by paramedics to save them, both men were later pronounced dead at local hospitals.

The victims have been identified as 23-year-old Donnie Martinez, believed to be a resident of the Phoenix area, and 35-year-old Ricardo Quintero, also of Phoenix. Family members of both men have been notified, and grief counselors were made available through victim services as the community begins to mourn the sudden loss.

Preliminary Details Emerge

According to initial findings released by Phoenix Police, Martinez was traveling northbound on 43rd Avenue when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle veered across the center lane into oncoming traffic. His car struck the southbound vehicle driven by Quintero head-on, resulting in catastrophic damage to both vehicles. Investigators are looking into whether excessive speed, impairment, distracted driving, or a medical emergency may have played a role.

“There is currently no definitive evidence of alcohol or drug use, but toxicology results are pending,” said Sgt. Melissa Anderson of the Phoenix Police Traffic Investigations Unit. “This was a high-impact crash, and we’re piecing together all the available data to understand what led to this tragedy.”

Community Shock and Outpouring of Grief

The crash sent shockwaves through the West Phoenix community, particularly among those who live near the scene and frequent the busy intersection where the collision took place. Many residents say the stretch of road has seen an uptick in reckless driving and speeding in recent months.

“I heard the crash from my house—it sounded like an explosion,” said Alicia Ramos, who lives two blocks away. “When I walked to the intersection, it was pure chaos. This should not keep happening.”

Both Donnie Martinez and Ricardo Quintero are being remembered by friends and loved ones as hardworking, kind, and family-oriented men. Social media posts have begun circulating, with friends sharing memories and calling for safer roads in the Phoenix area.

Safety Concerns and Road Conditions

This incident is the latest in a troubling pattern of fatal crashes in Maricopa County this year. According to Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) statistics, the state has already seen a significant rise in traffic fatalities in 2025 compared to the same period last year. Advocates for road safety are renewing calls for stronger enforcement of speed limits, more DUI checkpoints, and improvements in infrastructure to reduce the likelihood of head-on collisions.

“This loss is tragic and preventable,” said Emily Carter, a spokesperson for the Arizona Safe Roads Coalition. “Every life lost on our roads is one too many. We need to invest in better public awareness and enforcement to make sure drivers stay focused and alert.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Phoenix Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit is continuing to examine the crash scene, speak with witnesses, and review nearby surveillance footage. Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen the crash or the events leading up to it to contact them at (602) 262-6151 or anonymously through Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.

Funeral arrangements for both men are pending, and GoFundMe pages may be created by their families in the coming days to assist with final expenses.

As the city grapples with this tragedy, residents are urged to slow down, drive sober, and remain vigilant behind the wheel—reminders that could mean the difference between life and death on the roads we all share.
