Four Young Men Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Tragic Shooting Death of 13-Year-Old in Panola County, Mississippi, as Community Demands Justice and End to Gun Violence
PANOLA COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI — A tragic case that has shaken the community of Panola County took a major turn this week as authorities officially charged four individuals in connection with the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old child. The shooting, which took place earlier this month, has sparked outrage and sorrow among local residents, and law enforcement officials are now pressing forward with charges of second-degree murder against all four suspects.
The young victim, whose name is being withheld at this time due to their age and the ongoing investigation, was struck during a shooting incident that occurred in a residential area. According to Panola County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to reports of gunfire in the neighborhood and arrived to find the 13-year-old suffering from life-threatening injuries. Despite the best efforts of first responders and medical personnel, the child was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
After a thorough and intense investigation, detectives were able to identify and apprehend four suspects believed to be directly involved in the fatal shooting. All four individuals have now been formally charged with second-degree murder. Their names have been released to the public as:
- Travion Taylor, 20
- Kendrick Jackson, 18
- Marcus Liddell, 21
- Deshawn Reed, 19
Authorities believe the suspects were engaged in a dispute that escalated to gunfire, ultimately resulting in the senseless killing of an innocent teenager who was not the intended target. Investigators are still working to determine the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the shooting, but have confirmed that more arrests could follow as the case continues to develop.
Panola County Sheriff Shane Phelps addressed the media during a press conference, stating, “This is a devastating loss for our community, and the fact that a child’s life was cut short due to this senseless violence is unacceptable. We are committed to ensuring that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable.”
Family members of the victim have expressed their heartbreak, remembering the child as full of life, energy, and kindness. “He was only 13. He loved video games, playing basketball, and spending time with his friends. He didn’t deserve this,” said a relative during a candlelight vigil held in his memory.
The community has come together in the wake of the tragedy, calling for an end to gun violence and greater youth intervention programs. Local leaders have also urged parents and guardians to engage more actively with their children and work together to ensure safety and peace in their neighborhoods.
All four suspects remain in custody at the Panola County Jail. Court dates have not yet been announced, but the District Attorney’s Office confirmed that prosecutors will be seeking the maximum penalties allowed under the law.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information related to the case to contact the Panola County Sheriff’s Office or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
