Deadly Traffic Stop in Fairfax County: Two Officers Injured, Suspect Killed in Rapidly Escalating Shooting

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — April 23, 2025
A routine traffic stop turned into a violent and tragic encounter Wednesday afternoon, leaving two Fairfax County police officers injured and a suspect dead. The incident occurred in the 4000 block of Majestic Lane just after 3 p.m., according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The deceased suspect has been identified as a 36-year-old male resident who lived in the same neighborhood where the shooting unfolded. His name has not yet been publicly released pending family notification.

What Began as a Speeding Stop Escalates Quickly

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis spoke to reporters during a Wednesday evening news conference, laying out the timeline and harrowing details of the officer-involved shooting. The situation began when a patrol officer, conducting routine traffic enforcement with a radar, attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding. The driver initially complied, pulling over to the side of the road — but unexpectedly drove off moments later, only to stop again nearby.

“The driver refused to provide identification and informed the officer that he had a gun on his waist,” Chief Davis explained, noting he had personally reviewed the officer’s body-worn camera footage.

At this point, the traffic stop transformed into a potential deadly threat. Recognizing the risk, the initial officer called for backup. Two additional officers arrived and attempted to de-escalate the situation.

“The two officers who were shot never discharged their firearms,” said Davis. “They were focused on preventing the gunman from removing his weapon from its holster.”

Despite their efforts, the suspect succeeded in pulling the firearm from his waistband while seated in the driver’s seat and opened fire on the two officers standing at the driver’s side door.

Gunfire Erupts; Backup Officer Responds with Lethal Force

A 19-year veteran officer, who had just arrived on the scene and was positioned on the passenger side of the vehicle, witnessed the shooting and quickly responded. Davis described how the suspect leaned back in his seat, drew his gun, and fired at close range, striking the two officers attempting to restrain him.

The backup officer then returned fire, shooting the suspect in a move that likely prevented further injuries or deaths.

The wounded officers were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. They are expected to recover.

The suspect was also transported to the hospital but was later pronounced dead from his injuries.

Investigation Underway, Bodycam Footage to Be Reviewed

The Fairfax County Police Department’s Major Crimes Bureau has launched a comprehensive investigation into the shooting. In accordance with department policy, all officers involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Chief Davis emphasized transparency and accountability during the press conference and pledged that the body camera footage would be reviewed thoroughly and may eventually be released to the public.

“This incident underscores the danger our officers face during even the most routine encounters,” Davis said. “They acted with bravery and restraint in the face of a sudden and deadly threat.”

Community Reaction and Police History

This marks the first officer-involved shooting in Fairfax County in 2025, following only one such incident in 2024. The rarity of such shootings in the county has heightened public interest and concern.

Local leaders and community members have begun reacting to the news, expressing support for the injured officers and concern over the increasing volatility of police encounters.

“We’re grateful our officers survived this terrible encounter,” said Supervisor Jeff McKay. “But this is a sobering reminder that public safety is never guaranteed — and that every traffic stop carries potential danger.”

The Fairfax County Police Department has recently increased its de-escalation training and implemented advanced crisis intervention techniques, which were reportedly being utilized in this incident before the situation turned violent.

What’s Next

As of Wednesday night, investigators continue canvassing the scene, interviewing witnesses, and collecting forensic evidence. The suspect’s gun has been recovered and will be sent for ballistic analysis.

The identities of the injured officers have not yet been released. Police say their families have been notified, and both are in stable condition.

Authorities are also expected to review the suspect’s criminal history, mental health background, and potential motivations for resisting arrest and opening fire.

The Fairfax County Police Department encourages anyone who witnessed the incident or has video footage to come forward as the investigation continues.

Further updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
