Charlevoix High School Golf Team Involved in Tragic Crash in Benzie County: Coach Doug Drenth and Six Students Injured
BENZIE COUNTY, MI — A devastating crash has left the Charlevoix High School community shaken after a tragic accident involving the school’s boys’ golf team on Monday afternoon in Benzie County. Coach Doug Drenth and six student-athletes were hospitalized following the serious crash, which authorities say could have ended even more tragically were it not for the quick response of first responders and bystanders.
The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on April 28, 2025, near U.S. 31 and Fewins Road in Benzonia Township. According to the Benzie County Sheriff’s Office, the Charlevoix High School team was traveling in a van when their vehicle collided with a pickup truck that reportedly crossed the center line.
Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the scene after multiple 911 calls reported a major collision involving a school team. When authorities arrived, they found the school van badly damaged, with several students requiring urgent medical attention.
Injuries and Hospitalization
Coach Doug Drenth, who was driving the van, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for treatment. Six students, whose names have not yet been released pending parental notification, were also injured. They were taken to area hospitals with a range of injuries, from fractures and cuts to more serious trauma requiring ongoing care.
Hospital officials said that as of Tuesday morning, two students remain in critical condition, while the others are listed in stable condition. Coach Drenth is expected to make a full recovery, according to a statement released by Charlevoix Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Ritter.
“We are heartbroken by this incident but grateful that all of our students and Coach Drenth survived what was an extremely serious crash,” said Dr. Ritter. “Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected, and we will do everything possible to support their recovery.”
Investigation Underway
The Benzie County Sheriff’s Office has launched a full investigation into the crash. Preliminary reports suggest that the driver of the pickup truck may have experienced a medical emergency before veering into the oncoming lane and striking the van.
The driver of the pickup was also transported to a nearby hospital and is being treated for injuries. Toxicology tests and a full accident reconstruction are being conducted to determine the exact cause of the collision.
No charges have been filed at this time, but authorities stated that the investigation is ongoing and that further updates would be provided in the coming days.
Community Response and Support
In the wake of the crash, the Charlevoix community has come together in an outpouring of support for the students, their families, and Coach Drenth. A prayer vigil was held Monday evening at Charlevoix High School, where hundreds gathered to light candles and offer their prayers for the victims.
“We are devastated,” said Kim Carlson, a parent of one of the golf team members. “These boys are like brothers to each other. We are just thankful they are alive and asking for continued prayers for their healing.”
The school district has arranged for grief counselors and mental health professionals to be available to students and staff throughout the week.
Golf Team’s Season on Hold
Charlevoix High School officials have announced that all golf team activities have been suspended indefinitely as the school focuses on supporting the recovery of the injured players and their coach.
“We are putting health, healing, and family first,” said Superintendent Ritter. “The team has already made us proud, and now we rally around them with love and strength.”
The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) also released a statement expressing their condolences and pledging to support Charlevoix through this difficult time.
Looking Ahead
Plans are already underway to organize a fundraiser to help cover medical expenses for the families affected by the crash. Details about a possible GoFundMe campaign and a community benefit event will be announced in the coming days.
Meanwhile, school officials, parents, and the greater Charlevoix and Benzie County communities continue to pray for the full recovery of the young athletes and Coach Drenth, whose dedication to his students and their well-being has never been more evident.
“This is what small towns do,” said resident Laura Vance. “We lift each other up when tragedy strikes. We will get through this together.”
