Manhunt Underway After Two Passengers Shot on CTA Bus Following Argument on Chicago’s Northwest Side
CHICAGO, IL — Chicago police are actively searching for a 40-year-old suspect who opened fire on a CTA bus late Sunday night, injuring two passengers following a heated altercation. The incident, which unfolded around 11:45 p.m. on the city’s Northwest Side, has left the community shaken and authorities on high alert.
According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the violence erupted in the 4800 block of West Belmont Avenue. Witnesses report that a dispute between two men escalated while they were both riding the bus. Moments later, the suspect exited the vehicle — but instead of walking away, he allegedly pulled out a firearm and began shooting into the bus.
One of the victims, a man who had been directly involved in the argument with the suspect, was struck multiple times, sustaining gunshot wounds to his abdomen and leg. He was quickly transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he is currently listed in fair condition, authorities said.
Tragically, another passenger — who police believe was uninvolved in the dispute — was also injured during the shooting. The second victim’s condition and identity have not yet been publicly released.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene on foot, sparking a citywide manhunt. CPD officers and detectives have been canvassing the surrounding neighborhoods and reviewing CTA surveillance footage in an effort to identify and apprehend the gunman.
At this time, police have only provided a limited description of the suspect, confirming that he is a 40-year-old male. No arrest had been made as of Monday morning.
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) issued a statement condemning the violence and pledging full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
“The safety of our riders and employees remains our highest priority. We are working closely with the Chicago Police Department to aid their investigation and ensure all video footage from the bus is made available,” the statement read.
Several witnesses who were on the bus during the shooting have been interviewed by police. Some described the chaos and fear that erupted once the gunfire started.
“It was terrifying,” said one passenger who asked not to be named. “One moment they were arguing, and the next there were shots. Everyone was screaming and ducking for cover.”
Authorities have urged anyone with information about the shooting or the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward. Tips can be reported anonymously to CPD’s Area Five Detectives or submitted through Chicago’s tip line at 833-408-0069.
As the investigation continues, city officials are also reminding the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior on public transit systems.
This latest incident marks another troubling act of gun violence in Chicago’s public spaces, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety on mass transit.
More details are expected to emerge as investigators continue to gather evidence and track down the suspect responsible for the attack.
