Palm Harbor Mourns the Tragic Loss of Jose Castro Following Clearwater Bay Boat Incident

Palm Harbor, FL — A wave of sorrow has swept through the Palm Harbor community following the tragic death of 36-year-old Jose Castro, who lost his life in a devastating boating accident on Clearwater Bay over the weekend. Known for his warm personality, tireless work ethic, and deep devotion to his family and friends, Jose’s sudden passing has left those closest to him in shock and mourning.

The incident occurred on the afternoon of Saturday, April 26, 2025, when authorities say a recreational boat carrying several passengers encountered rough waters near the causeway bridge. According to reports from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Jose Castro was thrown overboard after the vessel struck an unexpected wake. Though others aboard the boat attempted to rescue him immediately, he was quickly swept away by the current.

Emergency responders were called to the scene around 3:45 p.m. and launched a full-scale search and recovery operation. Jose’s body was recovered later that evening by members of the sheriff’s marine unit, approximately half a mile from the location of the initial incident. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary findings suggest accidental drowning as the cause of death, pending results from the medical examiner’s office.

A Beloved Member of the Community

Jose Castro was a longtime resident of Palm Harbor, where he had built a life rooted in hard work, faith, and love for his community. He was a devoted husband and father of two young children, as well as a respected professional in the local construction and landscaping industry. Friends and neighbors describe Jose as a generous and humble man who would lend a hand to anyone in need, often volunteering for community clean-ups and helping neighbors with home improvement projects on weekends.

“He was one of the most dependable people you could ever meet,” said longtime friend and coworker Martin Delgado. “Whether it was fixing a roof, coaching a little league team, or just offering someone a ride, Jose was always there.”

Jose was also known for his deep ties to the local church community. As an active parishioner at St. Luke Catholic Church, he often assisted with youth ministry programs and weekend food drives. His spiritual commitment and willingness to serve left a lasting impression on those around him.

A Sudden, Heartbreaking Loss

The news of Jose’s death has been met with an outpouring of grief and condolences across social media and within the Palm Harbor neighborhood. Dozens of families have already left flowers and handwritten messages outside the Castro family’s home, and a candlelight vigil is being planned for later this week at Crystal Beach Park.

“He was the heart of his family and a true friend to so many of us,” said neighbor Elaine Rodriguez. “Losing him like this is unimaginable.”

Jose is survived by his wife, Mariela, and their two children, ages 7 and 10. Loved ones have established a GoFundMe campaign to help support the family during this difficult time, covering funeral costs and future educational needs for the children. Within just hours of its launch, the campaign had raised over $20,000, a testament to how many lives Jose touched.

Ongoing Investigation and Safety Concerns

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has joined the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office in investigating the accident. While no foul play is suspected, officials are examining factors such as boat speed, water conditions, and safety equipment to determine if any changes to boating regulations may be warranted.

The boating community, shaken by the incident, has called for increased awareness of water safety. Local marinas are reminding all boat owners and passengers to wear life jackets and follow all safety protocols while on the water.

A Life That Will Not Be Forgotten

Plans are underway for a public memorial service to be held later this week, with details to be shared by the family in the coming days. The Castro family has requested privacy as they navigate this unimaginable loss but expressed gratitude for the support shown by friends, neighbors, and strangers alike.

“Jose’s legacy is one of kindness, faith, and unwavering love,” said Father Miguel Herrera of St. Luke Catholic Church. “His life was a gift, and though his time with us was far too short, his spirit will live on in every person he helped, every child he inspired, and every heart he touched.”

As Palm Harbor mourns, it also remembers — not only the tragic circumstances of Jose Castro’s passing, but the many ways he gave joy, hope, and strength to those around him. His memory will endure as a beacon of goodness in a community now forever changed.
