Tragedy Strikes South Minneapolis: Three Dead, Two Critically Injured in Targeted Mass Shooting Near Bloomington Avenue and East 25th Street

Minneapolis, MN – In a deeply troubling outbreak of violence, a mass shooting in South Minneapolis has left three people dead and two others critically injured late Sunday night, April 28, 2025. The incident occurred shortly after midnight near the intersection of Bloomington Avenue South and East 25th Street, shaking a community that has only recently begun to experience a period of calm after years of tension.

Authorities say the mass shooting began at approximately 12:10 a.m. when Minneapolis police and emergency medical teams were dispatched to the scene after receiving multiple reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, responders found five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds, three of whom were declared deceased at the scene.

The area of the shooting falls within Ward 9, represented by City Council Member Jason Chavez, who expressed sorrow and frustration over the violence during a statement Monday morning. “Our city is heartbroken. These are our neighbors, our family members. We cannot continue to accept this level of violence as normal,” Chavez said.

Victims and Injuries

According to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, two surviving victims were transported to a local trauma center in critical condition.

  • One victim, a 24-year-old woman, sustained a gunshot wound to the face. Medical personnel reported that while the bullet had not exited her skull, she was alert with stable vital signs at the time of transport.
  • A 30-year-old male victim was shot in the head and was described as “unresponsive” with agonal breathing, indicating a dire condition upon arrival at the hospital.

All five victims are believed to be adults. The identities of the deceased have not yet been made public, pending next-of-kin notification by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Chief O’Hara said early indications suggest the shooting was not random, but rather a “targeted act” possibly tied to gang activity. “We believe at least some of the victims were intentionally targeted,” he said in a press conference Monday morning. “Some were found inside a vehicle, and one male was discovered on the sidewalk. This was not a random act of violence — it was calculated and brutal.”

Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact

The scene was chaotic in the aftermath of the shooting. While police were securing the area, additional gunfire was reported just blocks away, although no further victims were discovered. However, shell casings and other ballistic evidence were recovered from that secondary scene, raising alarms about the possibility of ongoing violence.

O’Hara described the emotional intensity of the response. “There were family members wailing to our officers at the scene,” he recounted. “That’s always the hardest part — facing loved ones in shock, confusion, and heartbreak.”

The shooting represents one of the deadliest single acts of gun violence in Minneapolis this year and comes at a time when community leaders had hoped a recent lull in violence marked a turning point. “The peace we have worked so hard to build has been shattered,” Chief O’Hara lamented. “This is a dark day for our city.”

City and state officials have pledged full support for the investigation, which remains active. Forensic specialists have already begun analyzing a “significant amount” of evidence collected at both scenes. Surveillance footage from local businesses and residences is also being reviewed.

Call for Community Help

The Minneapolis Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously via CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online at crimestoppersmn.org.

“We know someone in the community saw something, heard something, or knows something,” said MPD spokesperson Sgt. Andrew Peterson. “Please come forward. Help us bring justice to these victims and their families.”

As of Monday afternoon, no arrests had been made. A motive remains under investigation, but law enforcement sources have confirmed they are exploring connections to recent conflicts involving local gang factions.

A City in Mourning

Across Minneapolis, reactions to the mass shooting have been marked by grief, anger, and a renewed demand for action to address gun violence. Community vigils are already being planned, and local clergy and advocacy groups have called for increased intervention programs to help curb future bloodshed.

“This tragedy is a painful reminder that too many of our neighborhoods remain vulnerable,” said Reverend Angela Voss of Southside Interfaith Coalition. “We need action — from City Hall, from law enforcement, from every person who cares about our children, our families, and our safety.”

As the community grapples with this latest tragedy, city officials and first responders are bracing for a long and complex investigation — and another round of difficult conversations about violence, justice, and healing.

Updates will be provided as more details become available from the Minneapolis Police Department and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
