Tragic Loss in Hickman County: 1st Circuit Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Stacy Killed in Fatal Crash

 

Clinton, Kentucky — April 29, 2025 — The Commonwealth of Kentucky is mourning the devastating loss of a respected public servant. Michael B. Stacy, the 1st Circuit Commonwealth’s Attorney, tragically lost his life in a fatal car crash Tuesday afternoon in Hickman County. The accident has sent shockwaves through the legal community and the many communities he served with dedication and integrity for decades.

According to the Kentucky State Police, the crash occurred around 3:20 p.m. on U.S. Highway 51 in Clinton. Stacy, 68, was traveling north in his 2018 Infiniti Q50 when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle veered off the roadway and struck a tree. Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His son, Michael “Bo” Stacy II, 30, who also serves as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney, was a passenger in the vehicle. He sustained serious injuries in the crash and was airlifted to a regional trauma center for treatment. As of the latest reports, he remains in stable condition. Both father and son were wearing seatbelts.

Mike Stacy served as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for the 1st Judicial Circuit, which includes Ballard, Carlisle, Fulton, and Hickman counties. Known for his sharp legal mind, tireless work ethic, and unwavering dedication to justice, he spent decades in service to the people of western Kentucky. His colleagues often described him as tough in the courtroom but fair, and deeply compassionate toward victims and their families.

In a public statement, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman expressed deep sorrow over Stacy’s sudden passing:

And as a public servant, he earned the respect of his colleagues and the families he served. I had the privilege to work with Mike throughout the years, and I’m devastated by his sudden loss. Over his long career, Stacy was recognized with several of the state’s top awards for both County and Commonwealth’s Attorneys. He also served in leadership positions within Kentucky’s prosecutorial community, earning the admiration of peers across the state.

The tragedy is being deeply felt across the legal profession and throughout the communities Mike Stacy served. Flags outside courthouses in the region were lowered to half-staff in his honor, and many local leaders and law enforcement agencies have issued condolences, sharing stories of his mentorship, courtroom advocacy, and deep concern for justice.

The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing. Kentucky State Police have not released further details at this time.
