Martinsville Homicide Update: Victim Identified as James Baldwin Jr.; Vehicle of Interest Recovered as Investigation Intensifies
MARTINSVILLE, VA — April 30, 2025
Authorities in Martinsville have identified the victim in a recent homicide case that has shaken the quiet community. The deceased has been named as James Baldwin Jr., 34, a resident of Stultz Road. His body was discovered early Tuesday morning along the shoulder of Lee’s Ridge Road, bearing multiple gunshot wounds.
According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 7:30 a.m. on April 29 after a passerby reported seeing a body along the 500 block of Lee’s Ridge Road. Upon arrival, law enforcement found Baldwin deceased at the scene. The area was immediately cordoned off, and a homicide investigation was launched.
Homicide Believed to Have Occurred at Residence
Further investigation led detectives to a home located at 1145 Ridge Road, where evidence collected at the scene strongly suggests that the fatal shooting occurred inside the residence before Baldwin’s body was moved. The Martinsville Police Department, now the lead agency on the case, obtained a search warrant and processed the home for evidence throughout the day.
“This was not a random act,” said Martinsville Police Chief Rob Fincher during a press briefing Wednesday morning. “We believe the victim and the individuals involved were known to each other. Our department is following strong leads and remains committed to bringing the perpetrator or perpetrators to justice.”
Vehicle of Interest Recovered
Investigators also located a gold 2022 Chevrolet Trax with Virginia tags TGB-2200, which had been listed as a vehicle of interest earlier in the case. Officials say the vehicle was crucial to the investigation, possibly used to transport Baldwin’s body. The car has been impounded and is undergoing forensic examination.
No Arrests Yet, but Interviews Underway
As of Wednesday afternoon, no arrests have been made, but detectives have confirmed that several individuals of interest are being questioned. Authorities have not disclosed the names of these individuals, citing the sensitivity of the investigation.
Chief Fincher emphasized that although the community may feel unsettled, there is no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety.
Public Urged to Come Forward
Police are asking members of the public for any information that might assist the investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area or who may have security footage from April 28 or 29 is encouraged to contact Detective Steven Rogers at 276-403-5331 or the department’s non-emergency line at 276-638-8751.
