Former East Carolina Football Player Chandon Hickerson Tragically Killed in Louisiana Car Crash
VACHERIE, LOUISIANA — The sports world is mourning the loss of former East Carolina University (ECU) football player Chandon Hickerson, who tragically lost his life in a devastating two-vehicle crash in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, on the morning of Monday, April 28, 2025. He was just 26 years old.
According to the Louisiana State Police, the crash occurred around 5:30 a.m. on Louisiana Highway 16 near Old Ferry Road. Hickerson, a resident of Vacherie, was behind the wheel of a 2014 GMC Sierra when a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 traveling in the opposite direction veered across the center line, striking Hickerson’s vehicle head-on.
Authorities reported that Hickerson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle, who also was not restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Toxicology results are pending, although initial findings do not suggest impairment played a role in the crash.
Chandon Hickerson was known for his dedication on and off the field. A native of Vacherie and a graduate of St. James High School, Hickerson was a standout athlete who earned a place on the East Carolina Pirates football team, where he played from 2016 to 2020. He was recognized for his strong work ethic, leadership qualities, and commitment to the team’s success.
Following his passing, tributes have poured in from former teammates, coaches, and friends who remembered Hickerson as a driven young man with a positive spirit and a deep love for football. East Carolina University released a statement expressing condolences to Hickerson’s family and honoring his legacy as a beloved member of the Pirate community.
“Chandon was a great teammate and an even better person,” one former ECU coach remarked. “He made a lasting impact on everyone around him, and his loss is deeply felt.”
Funeral arrangements have not yet been publicly announced, but a memorial service is expected in the coming days to honor his life and contributions.
As the investigation into the crash continues, the Hickerson family and the wider East Carolina football community are left grappling with the sudden and heartbreaking loss of a young man who had so much more ahead of him.
