Former Security Guard Opens Fire at Spartan College in Inglewood, Leaving Two Women Critically Injured
Inglewood, California – May 2, 2025 — A terrifying incident unfolded Friday afternoon at Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology’s Inglewood campus, when a former security guard opened fire inside the administrative office, critically injuring two women in what authorities are calling a targeted act of workplace violence.
The shooting occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. within the campus located at 8911 Aviation Boulevard, not far from Los Angeles International Airport. Police and emergency responders flooded the scene following numerous 911 calls reporting gunfire inside the facility.
Former Employee Identified as Suspect
Inglewood Mayor James Butts confirmed that the suspect was a former security guard at the college, which allowed law enforcement to quickly identify him by name and track his movements. Although the identity of the shooter has not yet been publicly disclosed, police indicated that he was familiar with the layout of the campus and may have had knowledge of employee routines and schedules.
Eyewitnesses at the scene described chaos as the shooter, reportedly still wearing a security uniform, entered the administrative office and began firing. Two female employees were struck and sustained life-threatening injuries. They were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics and remain in critical condition.
Manhunt and Arrest
After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, prompting an extensive manhunt that stretched across the greater Los Angeles area. Thanks to rapid coordination and surveillance, law enforcement tracked the man to the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles, where he was located and taken into custody without incident several hours later.
AIR7 HD aerial footage showed dozens of officers and tactical units combing through the Spartan College campus during the lockdown, while students and staff sheltered in place. The lockdown was lifted once police confirmed the suspect had left the area.
Campus Response and Community Impact
In the aftermath, Spartan College issued a brief statement expressing deep concern for the victims and gratitude for the swift response by first responders. “Our hearts go out to our colleagues who were injured, and we are working closely with authorities during this investigation,” the statement read.
The Inglewood campus, which serves around 500 students and specializes in aviation maintenance training, is one of several operated by Spartan College nationwide. Friday’s violence has deeply unsettled the school community, raising questions about safety protocols and background screenings for former staff.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet established a clear motive for the attack. Investigators spent Friday evening interviewing dozens of students, faculty, and staff members in an attempt to reconstruct the suspect’s actions and potential grievances.
“We believe this was a premeditated act of violence directed at specific individuals,” said Mayor Butts. “But we are still working to determine the why.”
The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of their families. Both are long-time employees of the school, according to officials familiar with the investigation.
As the community reels from this senseless act, support services have been made available to students and staff. Local officials have urged anyone with additional information to contact Inglewood Police immediately.
More details will be shared as the investigation develops.
