Second Victim Dies in Lenoir County Shooting; Suspect Faces Two First-Degree Murder Charges

Lenoir County, N.C. — May 3, 2025 — A domestic-related shooting that occurred in Lenoir County on the morning of May 2 has now claimed the lives of two individuals, prompting authorities to upgrade charges against the suspect to include a second count of first-degree murder.

According to the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office, 24-year-old Calvin Carlyle Kennion of Pink Hill succumbed to gunshot injuries late Friday night at ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville, hours after the violent incident took place. His death follows that of Latoya Marie Smith, 33, the estranged wife of the alleged gunman.

The suspect, Ross Jovian Smith, 35, of Kinston, is now charged with two counts of felony first-degree murder, along with other charges related to unlawful entry and firearms violations.

Details of the Incident

The tragic event unfolded around 8:30 a.m. Friday morning at a residence located in the 100 block of Carl Ball Lane, a rural area just outside Kinston. Law enforcement officials say Smith forcibly entered the home and immediately opened fire.

Inside the home were his estranged wife, Latoya Smith, and Calvin Kennion, both of whom were struck by gunfire. Latoya was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Kennion was airlifted to ECU Health Medical Center in critical condition but ultimately passed away from his injuries later that evening.

Authorities have described the shooting as domestic in nature, and are investigating the motive as likely connected to a history of marital issues and prior domestic disturbances between Ross and Latoya Smith.

Suspect in Custody

Ross Smith was taken into custody shortly after the shooting. Sheriff’s deputies responded rapidly to the scene following 911 calls from neighbors who reported hearing multiple gunshots. Smith was apprehended without incident and is currently being held without bond in the Lenoir County Detention Center.

In addition to the two murder charges, Smith is expected to face charges including first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Authorities have not disclosed whether there were any active restraining orders or prior legal proceedings between the Smiths.

Community Reactions and Ongoing Investigation

The double homicide has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community of Lenoir County. Neighbors described Latoya Smith as a caring mother and dedicated member of the community. “She was trying to rebuild her life,” said one friend who wished to remain anonymous. “She didn’t deserve this.”

Investigators are continuing to process evidence from the scene, including shell casings, surveillance footage from nearby residences, and witness statements. The Sheriff’s Office has requested that anyone with further information about the incident or Smith’s whereabouts prior to the shooting come forward.

A spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office stated, “This is a devastating loss for the families involved and for our community. We are committed to ensuring justice is served for both victims.”

Funeral Arrangements and Support

Funeral arrangements for both Latoya Smith and Calvin Kennion are currently underway. Community organizations and local churches are offering grief counseling services to residents affected by the tragedy.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional updates will be provided as new details emerge.
