Heartbreaking Loss: Baby Ëllie Passes Away at Just Three Months Old, Community Rallies Around Grieving Family with Love and Support
Houston, TX — What began as a typical family gathering on a quiet residential block near Cherryhill Drive turned into a nightmare early Saturday morning, when a hail of gunfire shattered the peace and left 14 people shot, one of them fatally, and several more critically injured.
The violence erupted just before 1:00 a.m. in a neighborhood nestled between South Loop and Mykawa Road, prompting a swift and intense response from the Houston Police Department. Officers arrived on the scene within three minutes of a 911 call reporting active gunfire. As they moved to secure the area, they were met with the terrifying sound of shots still ringing out.
A Family Party Turns Into a Tragedy
According to Houston Police Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu, the chaos began when an uninvited guest arrived at the private family event and was asked to leave. That’s when the situation took a deadly turn.
“As the individual was leaving the residence, he allegedly pulled out a firearm and opened fire on the gathering,” Cantu said at a press briefing. “Some partygoers returned fire, leading to a shootout that left victims scattered throughout the property.”
Officers described a disorienting and rapidly evolving scene as they tried to assess the scope of the incident. “There were multiple scenes, and several victims were found both inside and outside the home,” Cantu continued. “It was chaotic from the start.”
One Dead, Several Critical
Among the 14 individuals struck by gunfire, one was pronounced dead on the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. Several other victims remain in critical condition and are undergoing emergency surgery at nearby hospitals. Others suffered less severe wounds and are now reported to be in stable condition.
Emergency medical services were overwhelmed as victims were transported in various ways. Ambulances rushed many to hospitals, but at least three victims were driven by private vehicles and dropped off at a Jack-in-the-Box located on Long Street near Loop 610.
Shooter Not Yet Confirmed in Custody
Houston police detained several individuals for questioning in the immediate aftermath, but it remains unclear whether the suspected gunman is among them.
“We have people we’re talking to, but we are not confirming at this point that the shooter is in custody,” Cantu told reporters. “We are processing multiple crime scenes and trying to gather accurate witness statements.”
Community Asked to Come Forward
As the investigation continues, the Houston Police Department is urging the public, especially anyone who was present at the gathering, to come forward with any information that might aid in identifying the shooter.
“We need witnesses to speak up,” Cantu emphasized. “If you were there, saw something, or know anything that can help, please reach out.”
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or submit anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
A City on Edge
This mass shooting marks yet another disturbing instance of gun violence in a residential setting—this time, during what should have been a joyful celebration with loved ones.
As the community reels from the tragedy and families await updates on the wounded, questions remain about how and why a night meant for connection turned into a scene of terror and bloodshed.
“We’re going to find out who’s responsible for this,” Cantu concluded. “And we will ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.
