Houston, TX – Mass Shooting at Family Gathering Leaves One Dead, 13 Injured in Southeast Houston
A mass shooting at a family gathering in Southeast Houston early Sunday morning has resulted in one fatality and left 13 others injured, according to the Houston Police Department (HPD). The violent incident occurred around 12:50 a.m. in the 6000 block of Cherryhill Street, an area known for its vibrant residential community.
HPD Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu confirmed that the violence erupted after an uninvited guest was asked to leave the gathering. The individual, who had reportedly been causing a disturbance at the party, is said to have reacted aggressively when asked to leave. As he walked away, he allegedly pulled out a firearm and began shooting at the crowd of partygoers.
In the ensuing chaos, several individuals at the party reportedly returned fire, escalating the situation into a full-blown gunfight. Witnesses described a terrifying scene as gunshots rang out in multiple directions, with people scrambling for cover.
HPD officers were quickly dispatched to the scene, arriving within three minutes of receiving the emergency call. However, the situation remained volatile upon their arrival, with gunfire still being reported in the surrounding area as police worked to secure the premises and ensure the safety of those present. Authorities cordoned off the area and began to treat the injured victims.
Victims were found at multiple locations around the party venue, including several who were rushed to nearby hospitals by emergency medical services. Notably, three victims were dropped off at a Jack-in-the-Box restaurant located on Long Street near Loop 610, where they received treatment before being transported to medical facilities.
In total, 14 individuals were injured in the gunfire, with one person confirmed dead at the hospital. Several others were in critical condition and undergoing emergency surgery, while others were reported to be in stable condition. The names of the victims have not yet been released, and authorities have not publicly identified the deceased.
The incident prompted a swift response from law enforcement, with multiple individuals being detained for questioning. However, HPD has not confirmed whether any of the detained individuals are connected to the shooting or if the suspected shooter has been apprehended. Investigators are working across several crime scenes related to the incident and are focusing on piecing together the details of the events that led to the mass shooting.
HPD is urging anyone who attended the party but left before police arrived, or who may have transported victims to the hospital, to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation. Witnesses or individuals with any knowledge of the incident are encouraged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at (713) 308-3600 or to submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS (8477).
As the investigation continues, the community remains shaken by the senseless violence that unfolded in what was meant to be a celebratory family gathering. Local residents are expressing their concerns over the growing number of gun-related incidents in the area and are calling for increased safety measures to protect families and loved ones in their neighborhoods.
