West Sacramento Teen Shot in Retaliatory Attack Just Days After Sacramento Teen’s Fatal Shooting, Raising Alarms About Youth Violence and Gun Access in the Region

West Sacramento, CA – A 16-year-old West Sacramento teen is in critical condition after being shot multiple times in what authorities believe was a retaliatory attack. The shooting occurred Friday night, just days after the fatal shooting of another 16-year-old in Sacramento, sparking fears of escalating violence in the region.

According to the West Sacramento Police Department, the shooting took place around 10 p.m. near Linden Road and Allan Avenue. Officers responded to the scene and found the teen suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, but the attack is believed to be linked to the recent killing of Adrian Carter, a Sacramento teen, two days earlier.

A Retaliatory Shooting

The West Sacramento Police have stated that the shooting appears to be in direct retaliation for the murder of Adrian Carter, a 16-year-old Sacramento resident who was shot and killed on Wednesday, just two days before the West Sacramento shooting. The incident occurred at Summerfield Park, located on the same street as the shooting that injured the teen from West Sacramento.

Carter’s death is believed to have been the result of a botched marijuana drug deal, according to police reports. During the altercation, a 21-year-old suspect, Adrek Miramontes, was arrested in connection with Carter’s killing. Miramontes was taken into custody at a home in Sacramento County and is scheduled for arraignment on Monday.

While police have yet to confirm the connections between the individuals involved in these violent acts, the back-to-back shootings have shocked the local communities, leaving residents grappling with the senseless loss of young lives.

Community Reactions and Concerns

The news of both shootings has rattled the West Sacramento community, and many are questioning the rise in youth violence and the accessibility of firearms. Neighbors, some of whom knew the victims personally, expressed their disbelief and sorrow over the events.

“High school teenagers having access to guns, number one, and then we heard there were involving drugs,” said Daryl Freeman, a neighbor. “It’s just, two lives are lost now. For what? Two young guys who had a whole life ahead of them to do wonderful things.”

Another neighbor, visibly emotional, added, “It’s a tragedy. I can’t believe something like this would happen in our neighborhood.”

The memorial for Adrian Carter at Summerfield Park continues to grow, with young people paying their respects and grappling with the violence that has taken the life of one of their own. “It was shocking because he is sweet and not like that. That’s not the type of person he was,” said 16-year-old Ambreyel Evans, a friend of Carter’s. “They’re playing with each other’s lives like it’s a toy,” Evans added, reflecting the sentiment of many who are struggling to make sense of the senseless violence.

The proximity of the two shootings, occurring in what is considered a safer neighborhood, has deepened the shock felt by the community. “In this neighborhood too, two shootings right next to each other in this nicer neighborhood in West Sac,” said Lauren Dewitt, a close friend of Carter’s.

Officials Respond to the Violence

The recent shootings have prompted a response from local officials, who have expressed their shock and concern over the rising violence. West Sacramento’s Mayor Martha Guerrero issued a statement on May 2, 2025, offering her condolences to the victim’s family and calling for urgent action to prevent further gun violence.

“Our hearts are heavy following the tragic shooting of a 16-year-old in our community. We are praying for the young person’s recovery and holding their loved ones close during this deeply painful time,” said Mayor Guerrero. “Preventing gun violence has been a top priority, and this heartbreaking incident reinforces the urgency of our collective work to ensure safety for all—especially our youth.”

The Mayor further emphasized the need for community collaboration, citing the efforts of local government, law enforcement, and community organizations to address gun violence. She expressed gratitude toward the West Sacramento Police Department for their swift response to the shootings and their role in apprehending the suspect.

“By working together—across agencies, community organizations, and with residents—we can take real, meaningful steps toward ending preventable violence in our neighborhoods,” Mayor Guerrero concluded.

Investigation Continues

As of Saturday afternoon, West Sacramento police had identified a suspect in the retaliatory shooting, working in coordination with the Sacramento Police Department. A search warrant was executed at a Sacramento residence, where a juvenile suspect was taken into custody and subsequently transported to the Yolo County Jail. The suspect’s identity has not been revealed, as the individual is a minor.

The investigation into both shootings remains ongoing, with authorities working to piece together the connections between the victims and suspects. As of now, police have not released further details regarding the exact motivations or the relationships between the individuals involved in these violent incidents.

A Growing Concern

The recent shootings in West Sacramento and Sacramento have left the community grappling with questions about the factors contributing to youth violence. Access to firearms, gang-related activity, and drug trafficking are all being considered as potential contributors to the spike in violence.

Local schools and community groups are planning discussions on how to address these issues and prevent further tragedies. Many hope that by increasing awareness, providing better support systems for young people, and strengthening community bonds, they can reduce the prevalence of violence in their neighborhoods.

For now, both communities are left to mourn the loss of two young lives while hoping that the efforts of law enforcement and local leaders will ultimately help to prevent such senseless acts of violence from occurring again.
