May 6, 2025
The Burbank community is grappling with heartbreak following the tragic deaths of Paul Berkovitz, 69, his son Matthew J. Berkovitz, 36, and their beloved dog, Brody, who were all killed over the weekend in a devastating small plane crash in a Simi Valley neighborhood.
The Berkovitz family was well known and deeply respected, particularly within the Bow Wow Bungalow community, where Paul, Matthew, and Brody were cherished figures. Their sudden passing has sent waves of sorrow through friends, neighbors, and all who knew them.
“This is a loss that’s hard to put into words,” said a longtime friend. “Paul and Matthew were not only devoted to each other and their family, but they were also pillars of kindness and generosity in our community. Their love for Brody was evident to everyone—they were inseparable.”
The crash occurred on a clear afternoon, stunning residents of the typically quiet Simi Valley neighborhood. Emergency crews responded quickly, but tragically, all three lives aboard were lost. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, as the community awaits answers.
At Bow Wow Bungalow, an impromptu memorial has been set up, with flowers, candles, and heartfelt notes honoring the lives of Paul, Matthew, and Brody. Fellow pet owners and community members have gathered to share memories, comfort one another, and reflect on the enormous impact the Berkovitz family had on those around them.
“They were always there with a smile, offering help and warmth,” one resident recalled. “Brody was like a celebrity at the Bungalow—always full of joy and bringing happiness wherever he went.”
The Berkovitz family has asked for privacy as they navigate this overwhelming loss. Plans for a memorial service will be shared once arrangements are made.
In honor of Paul, Matthew, and Brody, the family encourages donations to local animal shelters or aviation safety organizations—causes that held a special place in their hearts.
The community will hold tight to the memories of Paul, Matthew, and Brody, honoring their legacy of love, warmth, and friendship that will never be forgotten.
