Violent Dispute Turns into Shooting on Knightsbridge Drive: 22-Year-Old Keaun Hughes Arrested After Man Shot Twice in Leg
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A violent confrontation erupted into gunfire on Monday night in a quiet Memphis neighborhood, leaving one man critically injured and another behind bars. Memphis Police say the suspect, 22-year-old Keaun Hughes, has been arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder after allegedly shooting a man twice in the leg during a dispute.
The incident occurred around 9:35 p.m. on Knightsbridge Drive. Officers with the Memphis Police Department were dispatched to the scene following reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they discovered a man lying on the ground suffering from two gunshot wounds to his lower right leg. The victim, whose name has not been released, was immediately transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
According to the initial police report, the victim told officers he had been standing in front of a residence when an unidentified man approached and shot him without warning. At the time, the victim was unable to provide further details regarding the suspect’s identity or the motive behind the shooting.
However, a female eyewitness stepped forward and offered a clearer account of what unfolded moments before the gunfire. She told officers that she observed two men arguing near the scene. During the dispute, she said, one of the men—later identified as Hughes—suddenly pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots. Two of the bullets struck the victim in the leg, causing him to collapse to the ground. The witness described how the wounded man attempted to crawl down the street, trying to escape further harm as the suspect fled the area on foot.
Responding officers quickly secured the scene and began canvassing the neighborhood. Thanks to the eyewitness testimony and rapid investigation, law enforcement was able to locate Hughes at a nearby home on Knightsbridge Drive. He was taken into custody without further incident.
Hughes now faces serious charges, including attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. He remains in custody as he awaits his first court appearance. It is unclear whether bond has been set or if Hughes has retained legal counsel.
The motive behind the argument that led to the shooting remains under investigation. Police have not indicated whether the suspect and victim knew each other prior to the confrontation.
Residents of the area expressed shock and concern over the violence that unfolded in their neighborhood. “This is normally a quiet street,” said one neighbor who asked not to be identified. “We never expected to see police lights and hear about someone getting shot right outside our homes.”
The Memphis Police Department continues to investigate the case and urges anyone with additional information or video footage related to the incident to come forward.
This shooting adds to a troubling pattern of gun violence in Memphis, where arguments and disputes frequently escalate into life-threatening altercations. City leaders have repeatedly called for stronger community engagement, conflict resolution programs, and tighter enforcement of gun laws to address the ongoing crisis.
As the victim continues to receive medical treatment, police are working to piece together the full circumstances that led to Monday night’s violent encounter. More details will be released as the investigation develops.
