Chaos in Montebello: One Victim Hospitalized, Suspect Found Shot in SUV After Violent Shooting Incident Sparks Massive Police Response

MONTEBELLO, Calif. — A chaotic and violent scene unfolded Tuesday evening in Montebello, as local law enforcement responded to a shooting that left one person hospitalized and ultimately led to the discovery of a wounded suspect in a nearby vehicle. The motive behind the incident remains unknown, and an active investigation is ongoing.

The initial call came in around 7:45 p.m., drawing a swift response from Montebello Police officers to the 800 block of West Mines Avenue, where they found an individual suffering from a gunshot wound. First responders immediately provided medical aid to the victim, whose condition has not yet been publicly released.

As police began their preliminary investigation, witnesses at the scene were able to provide a physical identification of the suspected shooter, stating he had fled on foot toward Montebello Boulevard. Officers quickly disseminated a description of a gray Chevrolet SUV believed to be connected to the suspect’s escape.

At approximately 8:00 p.m., just 15 minutes after the original emergency call, Montebello officers located a vehicle matching the description in the 545 block of South Montebello Avenue. By 8:09 p.m., law enforcement confirmed they had located the suspect inside the vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. It remains unclear whether the injury was self-inflicted or occurred during the initial exchange of gunfire.

Due to the potential threat of additional suspects or further violence, mutual aid was requested. Officers from Monterey Park Police Department and nearby Los Angeles County Sheriff’s stations were called in to support the scene containment, assist with securing the surrounding area, and help piece together the rapidly unfolding series of events.

The Montebello Police Department has not released the identities of either the victim or the suspect, and no arrests have been formally announced at this time. The current condition of the suspect is also unknown, and no motive has been determined or disclosed to the public.

Investigators remained at the scene late into the night, interviewing witnesses, collecting physical evidence, and reviewing security camera footage from nearby homes and businesses.

Residents in the area expressed concern and shock over the violence. “We heard the sirens and saw a lot of police,” one neighbor said. “This is usually a quiet neighborhood, so something like this really shakes you.”

Authorities are urging anyone with information that may assist in the investigation to contact the Montebello Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
