Driver Escapes Injury After Terrifying Late-Night Rollover Crash Near US Highway 1 Exit Ramp in Southern Pines; Emergency Crews Respond Within Moments After Hearing Impact

Southern Pines, NC — Emergency responders were called to the scene of a dramatic vehicle rollover Tuesday night that startled both first responders and residents near the intersection of the SE Service Road and the northbound US Highway 1 exit ramp at Pennsylvania Avenue.

The crash occurred just after 9:30 p.m., prompting an immediate response from the Southern Pines Fire & Rescue Department, Moore County EMS, and the Southern Pines Police Department. The first fire unit arrived within minutes, discovering a single vehicle overturned and resting on its roof.

Remarkably, the driver—the only occupant of the vehicle—was able to exit the car without assistance. Emergency medical personnel evaluated the individual at the scene, and although shaken, they did not require transport to the hospital.

According to fire officials, the crash was so close to the fire station that firefighters heard the collision happen while standing outside. Their proximity allowed them to respond within moments, potentially preventing further danger at the busy intersection.

“At first, we didn’t know what it was—then we heard the tires screech and the impact,” one firefighter said. “We were on the scene almost immediately.”

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Southern Pines Police Department. No other vehicles were involved, and there were no reports of road closures or additional hazards to other drivers.

Despite the violent nature of the rollover, the vehicle’s driver was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries. Officials credited seatbelt use and the quick arrival of emergency personnel with preventing a more tragic outcome.

This incident serves as a reminder of how quickly accidents can occur—even in familiar areas—and underscores the importance of cautious driving, particularly near highway ramps and intersections. Community members are also reminded to slow down during night travel and remain alert at all times.

No charges have been announced as of Wednesday morning. Further updates will be released pending the results of the police investigation.

The Southern Pines Fire & Rescue team, along with Moore County EMS and police units, were praised for their swift and coordinated response.
