Former Security Guard Charged with Murder After Deadly Workplace Shooting at Spartan College in Inglewood
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 6, 2025) — The quiet campus of Spartan College of Aeronautics and Technology was shattered on May 2 when a former security guard walked into an administrative office and opened fire, killing one school leader and wounding another. Now, 40-year-old Jesse Figueroa has been formally charged with murder and attempted murder in what authorities are calling a targeted act of workplace violence.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced the charges Monday, confirming that Figueroa, who previously worked as a contracted security guard for the college, is accused of carrying out the fatal shooting around 3:45 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred inside an office at the college’s Inglewood campus located at 8911 Aviation Boulevard, near Los Angeles International Airport.
Victims Identified; One Dead, One Seriously Injured
Tragically, the gunfire claimed the life of Dr. Cameisha Clark, the college’s Dean of Student Affairs, a highly respected administrator and educator with a long-standing commitment to student success and community engagement.
Dr. Clark, a proud three-time graduate of Clark Atlanta University, earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in 2011, followed by a Master of Social Work in 2013 and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership in 2020. Her academic and professional journey was marked by excellence and service. She was a former cheerleader and also held the title of Miss Mays at Benjamin E. Mays High School in Atlanta during the 2006–2007 school year.
“She was the heart of our student community,” said a colleague at Spartan College who asked not to be named. “Her energy, commitment, and compassion transformed lives every day. This is an immeasurable loss.”
A second staff member, whose identity has not yet been released, was also struck during the shooting. That individual survived but sustained serious injuries. Their current condition has not been disclosed, though officials say they are receiving medical care and are expected to recover.
Suspect Wore Security Uniform During Attack
According to investigators, Jesse Figueroa entered the building wearing a security guard uniform, despite no longer being employed with the college. Authorities believe he used this tactic to gain access to restricted areas and to avoid immediate suspicion.
Witnesses inside the building described a chaotic scene as gunshots rang out. “We heard popping sounds—then screaming,” said a staff member who was nearby when the shooting began. “People were running for cover. It was terrifying.”
Law enforcement officers quickly identified Figueroa as the suspect, aided by witness statements and surveillance footage. A description of his vehicle was also shared with law enforcement agencies across the region.
Arrest Made in Koreatown
Later that evening, Figueroa’s vehicle was located in Koreatown, a bustling neighborhood in central Los Angeles. He was apprehended by officers without incident, and a firearm was recovered at the scene. He was immediately taken into custody and transported to a local detention center, where he now awaits arraignment.
As of this report, Figueroa faces one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, and may face additional firearm-related charges as the investigation develops.
Investigators have not yet determined a motive for the attack. Figueroa had no recent criminal history on file and no restraining orders or active disputes involving the school. However, sources close to the investigation said officials are examining whether workplace grievances or mental health factors played a role.
Ongoing Investigation and Campus Closure
The Inglewood Police Department, in collaboration with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, continues to investigate the events leading up to the shooting. The campus remains closed to students and non-essential staff while authorities process the scene and conduct interviews with employees and potential witnesses.
A spokesperson for Spartan College released a statement saying:
“We are devastated by the events of May 2nd. Our thoughts are with the families of those impacted, and we are providing grief counseling and support to all members of our campus community. We will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement in their investigation.”
Community Mourning Dr. Cameisha Clark
The death of Dr. Cameisha Clark has sparked an outpouring of grief across academic and alumni communities. Former students, colleagues, and mentors from across the country have shared tributes online, celebrating her accomplishments, her leadership, and her enduring love for education.
“She was a beacon of light and purpose,” said Dr. Monica Daniels, a friend and fellow Clark Atlanta alumna. “To see her rise through every level of education and reach so many students—only for her life to be stolen like this—is a tragedy beyond words.”
Vigils are being organized both in Inglewood and in Atlanta, where she began her academic journey. The college has announced plans to establish a memorial scholarship in her honor, ensuring that her legacy of learning and leadership will continue to impact lives for years to come.
