Tragic Accident Claims Life of 30-Year-Old Pedestrian on U.S. 98 in Escambia County, Authorities Investigate Fatal Collision
Escambia County, FL – May 7, 2025 — A 30-year-old man from Pensacola was tragically killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a car while crossing the road improperly, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The fatal incident occurred around 2:23 a.m. on U.S. 98, just west of Amberwood Drive in Escambia County.
The FHP reported that a 21-year-old Pensacola man was driving westbound in the inside lane of U.S. 98 when the pedestrian, also from Pensacola, attempted to cross the highway from the right shoulder. The pedestrian crossed into the path of the car, and despite the driver’s efforts to react, the vehicle struck the man.
Crash Details and Response
The driver, who remained at the scene following the collision, stopped the car in the grassy median facing south, as confirmed by the FHP. Emergency personnel were immediately dispatched to the scene of the accident, but unfortunately, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the location.
Authorities have stated that the driver was not injured in the crash, and the FHP has not indicated any criminal charges at this time. The investigation is ongoing, and officials have not revealed the exact cause of the pedestrian’s decision to cross the road in the manner he did.
Ongoing Investigation and Community Impact
The fatal crash has left the community in shock, particularly among those who live along U.S. 98, a major highway known for its high-speed traffic. Local authorities are urging pedestrians and drivers to exercise extreme caution when traveling on the road, particularly during late hours when visibility may be limited.
In a statement, FHP Lt. John Smith emphasized the importance of safety for both pedestrians and drivers: “It’s critical that pedestrians use crosswalks or designated areas when crossing highways. Unfortunately, when people make the decision to cross in an improper manner, it significantly increases the risk of tragic accidents like this.”
The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the incident and has asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward. The agency is also working to notify the victim’s next of kin, though the victim’s identity has not yet been released.
Remembering the Victim
As authorities work to notify the victim’s family, the Pensacola community is left grieving the loss of another life on the roads. Local organizations, including traffic safety groups, are urging both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant in order to prevent further tragedies.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers pedestrians face when crossing busy highways, and officials are continuing their efforts to raise awareness about pedestrian safety.
The FHP is asking anyone with information regarding the crash or who may have witnessed the pedestrian crossing to contact their office as the investigation progresses.
