COLUMBIA, S.C. (May 8, 2025) – A fatal shooting is under active investigation by the Columbia Police Department after a man was discovered dead outside a motel in the northern part of the city early Wednesday morning.

Officers were dispatched to the Carolina Lodge motel, located in the 6300 block of North Main Street, just before dawn following a report of gunfire. According to officials, the call came in around 6:30 a.m., prompting an immediate police response to the area.

Upon arrival, first-responding officers located a male victim lying motionless in the parking lot of the motel. Emergency personnel attempted to provide aid, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The area was quickly cordoned off as homicide detectives and forensic teams launched a full-scale investigation. Officers canvassed the perimeter of the motel and nearby businesses, seeking surveillance footage that may have captured the moments leading up to the shooting. Investigators were also seen interviewing residents, staff, and bystanders who were present in or near the area at the time of the incident.

At this time, the Columbia Police Department has not confirmed a suspect or motive, but officials say that all leads are being pursued. It is not immediately clear whether the shooting was a targeted act or a random act of violence. Detectives are also working to determine whether the victim was staying at the Carolina Lodge or if he arrived at the location shortly before the shooting.

“This is a tragic incident, and we’re doing everything we can to piece together what happened,” said a spokesperson for the Columbia Police Department. “We’re urging anyone who might have seen or heard something suspicious to come forward, even the smallest detail could be crucial.”

The scene remained active for several hours Wednesday morning, with marked patrol cars, crime scene tape, and detectives seen combing the area for evidence. A mobile crime lab unit was also deployed to assist in collecting forensic materials from the parking lot and nearby premises.

Community members have expressed growing concerns about crime in the North Main area, particularly around motels and convenience stores, which have been hotspots for recent disturbances. This incident has only intensified local calls for increased patrols and public safety measures in the region.

As of Thursday morning, no arrests have been made, and police say the investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are asking for the public’s help and encouraging anyone with relevant information to contact the Columbia Police Department or reach out anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC (274-6372). Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
