Hacienda Heights, CA — A tragic traffic accident unfolded early Sunday morning on the westbound 60 Freeway near Hacienda Heights, resulting in one fatality and leaving 32 others injured. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed that the crash involved a tour bus and an SUV and led to a fire that engulfed at least one of the vehicles, sending plumes of smoke into the sky and forcing emergency responders into rapid action.
The collision occurred just after dawn near the Hacienda Boulevard exit. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the bus, carrying dozens of passengers, collided with an SUV, resulting in a fiery crash that temporarily closed several lanes of the heavily traveled freeway. Emergency crews arrived swiftly and began the process of rescuing passengers from the damaged bus, several of whom suffered burns, broken bones, or other trauma-related injuries.
CHP officers stated that the driver of the SUV, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of family, was pronounced dead at the scene. The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, but authorities are examining factors including speed, driver fatigue, and the possibility of mechanical failure.
The injured bus passengers were transported to local hospitals throughout Los Angeles County. While most were reported to be in stable condition, a few remain in critical condition. The bus, which was traveling from a Las Vegas tour route back to the Los Angeles area, was operated by a private company. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are expected to join CHP in examining the wreckage for clues as to how the crash occurred.
The westbound lanes of the 60 Freeway remained partially blocked into the afternoon as crews worked to clear debris and inspect the structural integrity of the roadway. Traffic was diverted to alternate routes, causing major congestion throughout the surrounding area.
Sunday’s deadly crash underscores persistent concerns about highway safety in California. According to recent data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, the state sees thousands of injury and fatality crashes each year, many involving tour buses and commercial vehicles. Safety advocates have long pushed for stricter regulations and improved oversight of commercial passenger transport companies.
“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for vigilance at all times,” said CHP spokesperson Sgt. Maria Lopez. “Our thoughts are with the families of those affected, and we are committed to a thorough investigation.”
In the meantime, family members of those involved in the crash have been directed to contact a designated emergency hotline set up by local authorities. Counseling and support services are being offered at nearby hospitals for victims and their families.
The 60 Freeway is expected to be fully reopened by Monday morning, pending clearance and safety checks.
Authorities urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
