East Palatka, FL (May 12, 2025) – In the early hours of Monday morning, a devastating house fire swept through a single-family residence in East Palatka, leaving three individuals dead and several others critically injured. The deadly blaze has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, prompting an outpouring of grief and support as authorities launch a full-scale investigation into the tragic event.
According to the Palatka Daily News, emergency services received multiple 911 calls just after 2:30 a.m. reporting heavy smoke and flames pouring from a home located on the 200 block of Willow Drive. First responders from the Putnam County Fire Rescue and East Palatka Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene within minutes to find the structure engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke visible for blocks.
Firefighters immediately began search-and-rescue efforts while battling the intense blaze. Despite their heroic actions, three individuals were tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been officially released, pending family notification. According to officials, the victims included both adults and at least one minor.
Several others were rescued from the home, some of whom sustained severe burns and smoke inhalation injuries. At least four people were rushed to nearby hospitals in critical condition, with some later airlifted to a specialized burn unit in Gainesville due to the extent of their injuries. Their conditions remain closely monitored.
Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are currently working in coordination to determine the cause of the fire. Investigators remained on-site throughout the morning, combing through the charred remains of the home for any clues that might explain how the fire started. Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities and emphasized that it is too early to say whether the blaze was accidental or the result of foul play.
Neighbors described being awakened by loud explosions and the sight of flames lighting up the early morning sky. “It looked like the whole house was glowing orange,” said longtime resident Carla Jennings, who lives two houses down. “By the time I got outside, the fire trucks were already there, but the fire was so strong. I just prayed everyone made it out.”
Another neighbor, Mike Reynolds, said he knew the family and was in disbelief. “They were good people. Always waved, always friendly. It’s hard to wrap your head around something like this happening so close to home,” he said, visibly shaken.
As the community grapples with the tragedy, local churches and organizations have begun mobilizing to support the affected family and emergency personnel. A temporary shelter has been set up at a nearby community center to provide assistance to displaced individuals and grieving relatives.
Putnam County School District officials also confirmed that grief counselors are being made available to students and staff, particularly as reports suggest that one of the victims may have been a child attending a local school.
“This is a heartbreaking day for East Palatka,” said Putnam County Sheriff H.D. ‘Gator’ DeLoach in a brief statement. “Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the first responders who are dealing with the aftermath of this terrible incident. We will continue to work tirelessly to find answers and support those affected.”
A candlelight vigil is being planned for Tuesday evening at the East Palatka Community Park to honor the lives lost and pray for the recovery of the injured. Organizers are also working to establish a relief fund to help the family with funeral and medical expenses.
The Palatka Daily News will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as more information becomes available. Community members are urged to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.
