Dover Community Devastated by Sudden Loss of Beloved Internist Dr. Michael McCombs, 59 — A Lifelong Healer, Mentor, and Friend to Thousands
DOVER, OH — It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that the Dover community bids farewell to one of its most cherished and dedicated medical professionals, Dr. Michael McCombs, who passed away suddenly at the age of 59. A respected internist with over three decades of service in the medical field, Dr. McCombs was more than a physician — he was a source of strength, compassion, and wisdom to countless families across Tuscarawas County and beyond.
His unexpected passing has sent shockwaves through the community, leaving an immeasurable void in the lives of his patients, colleagues, family members, and friends. Known for his calming presence, thorough care, and tireless dedication, Dr. McCombs was often described as “the doctor who always listened,” earning the trust and admiration of generations of patients.
Born and raised in Ohio, Dr. McCombs developed a passion for medicine at an early age. He earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed his residency in internal medicine at Cleveland Clinic, one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers. After completing his training, Dr. McCombs chose to return to his roots, settling in Dover where he joined a local practice and quickly became an integral part of the community’s healthcare landscape.
For over 30 years, he served as a dedicated internist, known for blending cutting-edge medical knowledge with an old-fashioned, patient-first philosophy. Whether treating chronic illnesses or addressing complex medical cases, Dr. McCombs was known for his attentiveness and empathy — always making time for a reassuring word or a thoughtful explanation, even on his busiest days.
Outside of his practice, Dr. McCombs was involved in numerous medical and civic organizations. He served on the board of Union Hospital and frequently volunteered at health fairs, school events, and public health initiatives. Colleagues often noted his collaborative spirit and willingness to mentor younger physicians, always encouraging them to place compassion at the core of their practice.
“Dr. McCombs was a cornerstone of our hospital family,” said Theresa Allen, RN, a longtime nurse at Union Hospital. “He made every patient feel seen and every team member feel valued. Losing him is a tragedy not only for medicine, but for Dover as a whole.”
He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Karen McCombs, their three children — Andrew, Jenna, and Tyler — and two grandchildren, all of whom he spoke of often with great pride. Family was at the heart of everything Dr. McCombs did. Despite his demanding schedule, he never missed a school concert, soccer game, or family vacation, and he was known for his storytelling, humor, and devotion to those he loved most.
In recent years, Dr. McCombs had begun mentoring medical students at Kent State University’s College of Podiatric Medicine, where he encouraged future doctors to embrace not only the science of healing but also the art of truly listening to their patients. Students and young doctors alike often described him as an inspiration.
The community will have the opportunity to pay their respects during public visitation hours, which will be held at Toland-Herzig Funeral Home in Dover. A memorial service celebrating Dr. McCombs’ life and legacy will take place later this week, with details to be announced by the family.
In lieu of flowers, the McCombs family has requested that donations be made in his honor to the American Heart Association or to a local scholarship fund that supports aspiring healthcare professionals in Tuscarawas County.
As Dover grapples with the loss of a trusted doctor, neighbor, and friend, many are taking solace in the countless lives Dr. Michael McCombs touched. His legacy of kindness, care, and commitment will endure for generations.
“He healed with his hands and his heart,” said longtime patient Marlene Winters. “The world was a better place because Dr. McCombs was in it. And it will never be the same without him.”
