Heartbreak in Helotes: Community Mourns the Sudden Loss of Ruby Lee Underwood, 29-Year-Old Mother of Two  in Tragic Motorcycle Crash

Helotes, Texas | May 2025

A devastating wave of sorrow has swept through the communities of Helotes and San Antonio following the heartbreaking loss of Ruby Lee Underwood, a vibrant and beloved 29-year-old mother of two, who was tragically killed in a multi-vehicle motorcycle crash on U.S. 90 in San Antonio over the weekend.

Ruby’s life was cut short in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 18, after she and several others were involved in a horrific chain-reaction crash near SW 36th Street. Authorities say a vehicle traveling eastbound lost control and spun out in front of a group of motorcyclists. Ruby was unable to stop in time. She was thrown from her bike and pronounced dead at the scene. The news has left a community in mourning and two young children—her son Chris “CJ” and daughter Sofia—without their mother.

A Life Overflowing with Love and Light

Ruby Lee Underwood wasn’t just another name in the headlines—she was the light in the lives of everyone who knew her. Known for her warmth, her boundless energy, and her infectious laugh, Ruby was the heartbeat of her family and a beloved member of her local biking community.

“She had the most genuine soul,” said Diana Medina, a close family friend and organizer of the official GoFundMe campaign launched in Ruby’s honor. “She was the kind of person who would drop everything to help someone else. Her children were her entire world.”

Born and raised in San Antonio, Ruby was the youngest of four siblings and fiercely protected by her three older brothers. She later made her home in Helotes, where she was raising her children with unwavering devotion. Every school event, every bedtime story, every scraped knee and silly laugh—Ruby was there. Her children, now grappling with the painful absence of their mother’s embrace, were her reason for everything.

Tragedy on the Road: What Happened

According to the San Antonio Police Department, the deadly incident occurred when a car lost control on the highway and collided with the group of motorcyclists Ruby was riding with. The crash caused multiple injuries and shut down the highway for hours as investigators worked the scene.

The driver of the car, along with a passenger, was initially detained at the scene but has since been released as the investigation continues. No charges have been filed at this time, but authorities are urging witnesses to come forward to help determine the full scope of what happened.

Ruby was one of four riders involved in the collision, and tragically, the only one whose life was lost.

Community in Mourning

News of Ruby’s death has reverberated across South Texas. Her fellow riders, friends, neighbors, and countless others who knew her through family, school, and the local community have responded with an outpouring of grief and support. A roadside memorial now marks the crash site—a solemn tribute decorated with flowers, candles, and a pink bouquet placed in her memory. Fellow bikers are planning a ride and helmet tribute in her honor in the coming days.

“She was sunshine in human form,” said a fellow rider. “You don’t meet many people like Ruby. Her joy was contagious, her heart enormous. She lifted people up without even trying.”

A Call for Support: Honoring Ruby’s Legacy

In the wake of this unimaginable loss, Ruby’s loved ones are focused on two things: laying her to rest with dignity and ensuring that her children, Sofia and CJ, are cared for as they face life without their mother.

A GoFundMe campaign titled “In Loving Memory of Ruby Lee Underwood” has been established to help cover funeral costs, immediate needs, and long-term care for the children. As of this writing, the campaign has raised over $6,000, with donations pouring in from friends, family, and strangers alike.

“We are heartbroken, but we’re also grateful,” said Diana Medina. “Grateful for the love, for the donations, for every share, every prayer. Ruby gave everything to her kids, and now we’re doing everything we can to give back to them.”

The family is urging those who may not be able to donate to at least share the campaign and help keep Ruby’s story alive. Every effort, no matter how small, makes a difference.
