DETROIT – A high-speed police pursuit through the streets of Detroit ended in a violent crash Friday afternoon when the suspect vehicle collided with a school bus, injuring several students and claiming the life of one individual. Authorities have now identified the victim.
The incident occurred around 3:45 p.m. on May 23 at the intersection of Fullerton Avenue and Meyers Road. Detroit police say the chase began after officers attempted to pull over a vehicle suspected to be involved in an earlier armed robbery. Instead of stopping, the driver sped off, leading police on a high-speed pursuit through multiple neighborhoods.
The chase ended in tragedy when the suspects’ car ran a red light and slammed into a school bus transporting children home from school. The crash caused significant damage to both vehicles.
On Saturday morning, police confirmed that a bystander, 52-year-old Lawrence Mitchell, was killed in the crash. Mitchell, a longtime Detroit resident, was reportedly walking along the sidewalk near the intersection when the suspect vehicle lost control and veered off the road, striking him before hitting the bus. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is an incredibly tragic loss,” said Detroit Police Chief James White. “Mr. Mitchell was an innocent pedestrian who became the victim of a reckless and senseless act. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Several children aboard the school bus sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. No life-threatening injuries were reported among the students.
The suspects—two males in their early twenties—attempted to flee the scene on foot but were quickly apprehended by officers. They remain in custody and are expected to face a lengthy list of charges, including second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter, fleeing and eluding, and endangering the welfare of children.
Community leaders and residents are now calling for renewed efforts to address high-speed chases and ensure safer practices during police pursuits.
The Detroit Public Schools Community District has pledged full support for the affected students and is providing counseling services.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police continuing to gather evidence from the scene and review surveillance footage. Charges against the suspects are expected to be formally filed in the coming days.
