Massive Truck Explosion Rocks Addison Neighborhood, Damages Multiple Homes After Propane Leak—Driver Injured, Streets Shut Down for Hours
ADDISON, Ill. — A powerful truck explosion shook a residential neighborhood in Addison on Saturday morning, damaging multiple homes and prompting a large emergency response. Authorities say the blast was caused by a leaking propane tank inside the vehicle, which ignited and triggered a violent explosion just before 9 a.m.
The incident occurred around 8:40 a.m. on Wood Dale Road, just north of Lake Street. Residents were jolted awake by the deafening sound of the explosion, which sent debris flying across the area and shattered windows in nearby homes.
“I was drinking coffee when the whole house rattled,” said local resident Juan Martinez. “I thought something had crashed into our street, but when I ran outside, all I saw was a plume of smoke and neighbors screaming.”
According to police, the truck was carrying propane, and a leak inside the vehicle caused gas to accumulate before it ignited. The resulting blast severely damaged the truck and impacted several surrounding structures. At least three homes suffered varying degrees of damage, with some experiencing broken windows, scorched siding, and minor structural issues.
Emergency crews, including firefighters and paramedics, arrived on the scene within minutes. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.
“This could have been a much worse tragedy,” said a spokesperson for the fire department. “Given the force of the explosion and the proximity to residential homes, it’s a relief that no one was seriously hurt.”
Authorities quickly closed surrounding roads to allow cleanup crews and hazardous materials teams to assess the damage and secure the area. Wood Dale Road remained shut down for several hours as firefighters ensured there were no lingering gas leaks or fire hazards.
Officials have confirmed that the explosion was accidental and that there is no indication of criminal activity or foul play. The investigation is ongoing, but the incident has already raised concerns about the safety of transporting flammable materials through suburban neighborhoods.
“We’re reviewing all protocols surrounding the transportation and storage of propane in residential areas,” said a town official. “Safety is our top priority, and we want to make sure this kind of incident doesn’t happen again.”
Several families were temporarily evacuated while crews ensured the area was safe. Emergency shelters were made available, and town officials were on hand to assist with displaced residents and damage assessments. Most of those affected were allowed to return home later in the day.
Cleanup efforts continued into the afternoon, with officials urging residents to stay clear of the area until all hazards were cleared.
No further updates have been issued as of Saturday evening, but authorities say a full report on the incident will be released in the coming days. Residents impacted by the blast are encouraged to contact the town’s emergency management office for assistance.
