Tragedy in East Westwood: 18-Year-Old Killed, Two Critically Injured in High-Speed Crash
CINCINNATI, OH (May 26, 2025) — A devastating early morning crash in East Westwood has left an 18-year-old man dead and two others fighting for their lives, according to the Cincinnati Police Department. The collision, which occurred shortly before 3 a.m. Sunday, has shaken the local community and prompted an ongoing investigation into what led to the fatal incident.
Police say the crash happened near the intersection of Harrison Avenue and McHenry Avenue, a corridor known for both residential traffic and a number of recent speeding complaints. Officers responded to the scene after receiving multiple 911 calls from nearby residents who were awakened by the sound of the impact.
When first responders arrived, they found a heavily damaged vehicle that had veered off the road and struck a utility pole. The 18-year-old male driver, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers, both also believed to be in their late teens or early twenties, were found unconscious and critically injured inside the vehicle.
Cincinnati Fire Department paramedics worked urgently to extricate the victims and transport them to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where they remain in critical condition as of Monday morning.
Investigators believe speed played a significant role in the crash. Preliminary findings suggest the car was traveling at a high rate before the driver lost control and collided with the pole. There was no indication that another vehicle was involved, though authorities are still reviewing nearby surveillance footage and conducting witness interviews to piece together the events leading up to the accident.
The Cincinnati Police Traffic Unit has taken over the investigation. Officers closed a portion of Harrison Avenue for several hours Sunday morning as they examined the crash site, collected evidence, and documented skid marks and debris patterns.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of young life,” said a spokesperson for the Cincinnati Police Department. “Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased and the other young individuals who are currently in the hospital. We are doing everything in our power to determine exactly what happened and ensure accountability if necessary.”
The tragic incident has renewed concerns among East Westwood residents over dangerous driving in the area. Several neighbors said they have noticed an increase in speeding and reckless behavior, especially during late-night hours.
“I’ve called the city three times in the last year to ask for more patrols or speed bumps,” said longtime resident Carol Williams, who lives two blocks from the crash site. “We’ve got kids, families, and now one of our young people is gone forever. Something needs to change.”
Cincinnati city officials have not yet commented on whether new traffic enforcement or safety measures will be implemented in response to the crash.
Grief counselors have been made available to students and staff at the high school the 18-year-old previously attended, where administrators said the loss is being felt deeply throughout the school community.
This is a developing story, and more details will be provided as they become available. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information relevant to the investigation to contact Cincinnati Police Traffic Unit at (513) 352-2514.
