21-Year-Old Kimberl Gedeon Shot and Killed in New Bedford: Homicide Investigation Underway

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A homicide investigation is underway in New Bedford after a young man was shot and killed Monday night, sending shockwaves through the local community.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, police were dispatched to the area of Bedford and South Seventh Streets around 9:10 p.m. for reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the ground.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old Kimberl Gedeon, was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The D.A.’s office confirmed his identity Tuesday morning, noting that the case is now being investigated as a homicide.

At this time, no arrests have been made and authorities have not said whether they have identified any suspects. Investigators from the New Bedford Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the D.A.’s office remain at the scene, working tirelessly to gather evidence, review surveillance footage, and interview potential witnesses.

Residents in the neighborhood described hearing a series of gunshots followed by chaos as police and emergency crews descended on the area.

“He was so young,” said one neighbor who asked not to be identified. “I heard the shots, then I saw all the lights. I just can’t believe it happened right here.”

Friends and family of Kimberl Gedeon took to social media overnight, posting emotional tributes and expressing disbelief over his sudden and violent death. Many described Gedeon as kind-hearted, respectful, and full of potential.

“He didn’t deserve this,” wrote one friend on Facebook. “We just talked a few days ago. I’m heartbroken.”

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Authorities are urging anyone with information—whether it’s something they saw or heard, or security camera footage that may help—to come forward and contact the New Bedford Police Department or the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

The fatal shooting adds to growing concerns about gun violence in New Bedford and other parts of southeastern Massachusetts. Community leaders are expected to speak out in the coming days about the city’s response and efforts to curb violence, especially among youth.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns a life taken far too soon. A candlelight vigil is expected to be organized in the coming days to honor Kimberl Gedeon’s memory.

This will be updated with new details as they emerge.
