Beloved Journalist Kim Mullahey Dies at 69: Community Remembers a Life of Stories, Service, and Spirit
CLANE, Co. Kildare – May 26, 2025 — It is with deep sadness that we report the passing of Kim Mullahey, a cherished figure in local journalism and former freelance contributor to the Liffey Champion, who died on Saturday morning following a brief illness. She was 69.
For many years, Kim was a steadfast presence in the pages of the Champion, where her expert voice brought life to our dining-out columns and her keen eye for detail gave readers a rich sense of local events and personalities. Her weekly page covering the happenings in Clane was more than just a rundown of community events—it was a tapestry woven with care, character, and a genuine love for the people and places she wrote about.
Kim’s commitment to her work extended beyond writing. She was also the original photographer for our much-loved “The Street” page, capturing the faces and spirit of everyday life in the towns and villages throughout North Kildare. Her lens chronicled everything from jubilant community events to thoughtful moments at council meetings in Maynooth and Clane. Through both words and images, Kim offered a window into the heart of our communities.
Beyond her contributions to the Liffey Champion, Kim’s journalistic résumé was diverse and distinguished. She was a contributor to The Irish Field, where her coverage often highlighted equestrian events with depth and enthusiasm. Her work with the All-Ireland Polo Club newsletter further showcased her knowledge and passion for equestrian sports.
Before her work in local media, Kim lived a rich and colorful professional life. Among her many roles, she served as a publicist at the Argentine Embassy and worked as a research assistant for Brendan Graham, the Irish songwriter best known for penning the Eurovision-winning “Rock ‘n’ Roll Kids” and “The Voice.” Her time in those roles reflected her intellect, creativity, and exceptional communication skills.
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Kim brought with her an unmistakable American warmth and an enduring accent that never left her, even after decades in Ireland. Despite facing personal hardships, she remained resilient and spirited. Those who knew her often spoke of her bubbly personality, her ability to light up a room, and the quiet ways she used her skills to help others behind the scenes.
She was not only a journalist but a friend, a neighbor, and a compassionate soul who took great joy in giving voice to others through her writing. Her work uplifted local causes, celebrated community achievements, and provided comfort during challenging times. Kim was the kind of person who made a lasting impression, not only through her bylines but through her kindness and sincerity.
Her dedication to her family was equally admirable. Kim was a devoted wife to her late husband Peter, whom she cared for with unwavering love until his passing in March 2024. Her loss is felt most deeply by her beloved son Brendan, to whom we extend our heartfelt condolences.
As we reflect on Kim’s remarkable life, we remember a woman who gave so much of herself to the people around her—through her journalism, her friendships, and her unwavering sense of community. Her legacy will continue to live on in the stories she told, the people she helped, and the countless lives she touched.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.
May she rest in peace.
