BREAKING: Morrow County Deputy Daniel Sherrer Fatally Shot Responding to Domestic Call — Community in Mourning
MORROW COUNTY, OH — MAY 27, 2025 — Tragedy has struck the Morrow County community following the fatal shooting of a local deputy responding to a domestic situation. At a solemn press conference held just moments ago, Morrow County Sheriff John L. Hinton confirmed the death of Deputy Daniel Sherrer, 31, who succumbed to injuries sustained during the violent encounter late last night.
According to Sheriff Hinton, Deputy Sherrer was dispatched to a domestic disturbance late Monday evening. Details about the nature of the incident remain limited, but the Sheriff confirmed that upon arrival, the situation escalated quickly and turned deadly.
“Deputy Daniel Sherrer was shot while responding to a domestic call. Despite all lifesaving efforts by fellow officers and emergency medical personnel, he did not survive his injuries,” Sheriff Hinton announced, visibly shaken by the loss. “This is a devastating day for our department, for our county, and for everyone who knew Daniel. He was not just one of our own — he was family.”
Sherrer had served with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office since 2021 and was well-known in the community for his positive attitude and unwavering commitment to public service.
“Daniel always had a smile on his face. I don’t think anyone ever saw him in a bad mood,” said Hinton. “He loved his job. He loved serving his community. We’ve lost a dedicated deputy, a good man, and a son.”
When pressed for details about the shooter, Sheriff Hinton refused to reveal the suspect’s identity. “I will not say the suspect’s name. They do not deserve the recognition. This is about Daniel — his life, his service, and his sacrifice.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the suspect is in custody or deceased. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has taken over the investigation, and officials say more details will be released as the case progresses.
Deputy Sherrer is survived by his parents, who, according to Sheriff Hinton, were notified overnight and are now receiving support from the sheriff’s office and grief counselors.
Community members and fellow law enforcement officers have already begun mourning the loss, with makeshift memorials appearing outside the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office. American flags fly at half-staff, and a steady stream of residents has stopped by to leave flowers, notes, and candles in tribute to the fallen deputy.
“This loss hits hard,” said lifelong Morrow County resident Carla Jenkins. “You see these kinds of things happen on the news in other places. You never think it’ll happen in your own backyard. Deputy Sherrer always treated everyone with respect. He will be sorely missed.”
Governor Mike DeWine has been notified and issued a brief statement expressing condolences to the Sherrer family and Morrow County law enforcement.
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Deputy Daniel Sherrer,” the Governor said. “He made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and our hearts go out to his family, friends, and fellow deputies.”
Flags across the state have been ordered to be flown at half-staff in Deputy Sherrer’s honor.
A formal funeral service is expected to be announced in the coming days. Sheriff Hinton noted that his department is already working closely with the family to arrange a memorial that reflects the courage and character of Deputy Sherrer.
In the meantime, the community of Morrow County grieves together — united in sorrow, strengthened by the legacy of a young deputy who gave his life in service to others.
