HEMPSTEAD COUNTY, AR – A potentially devastating crash was narrowly avoided Sunday evening, June 1st, when a pickup truck collided with an 18-wheeler along State Highway 73, between the communities of Cross Roads and Columbus.

The Hempstead County Sheriff’s Office reports that the collision occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. According to deputies on the scene, the pickup truck, driven by 42-year-old Michael Turner of Hempstead County, was traveling southbound when it came into contact with a semi-truck hauling freight. The 18-wheeler was operated by 55-year-old John Reynolds of Little Rock.

While the impact was significant, local emergency services responded swiftly, ensuring that both drivers received immediate medical attention. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. Turner and Reynolds were both treated at the scene for minor injuries and did not require hospitalization.

Hempstead County Emergency Medical Services, the County Fire Department, and Arkansas State Police arrived promptly to secure the area, assist with the investigation, and manage traffic. State Highway 73 was temporarily closed for nearly two hours, resulting in traffic delays, before reopening just before 9 p.m.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, but preliminary information suggests that one of the vehicles may have crossed the center line. Authorities continue to review witness statements and examine the crash site to determine contributing factors.

Sheriff Robert Calloway emphasized the importance of driver vigilance on rural highways. “This was a close call, and we’re thankful that no one was seriously hurt. We remind everyone to drive carefully, especially when sharing the road with large commercial trucks,” Calloway said.

Local residents expressed relief that the incident did not result in more severe consequences. “It’s frightening to think about how bad this could have been,” said Amanda Jenkins, who lives near the crash site. “We’re grateful for the quick response from our first responders.”

This incident serves as a critical reminder of the risks present on rural roadways and the importance of safe driving practices, particularly when large trucks and smaller vehicles share narrow highways.
