Armed Gunman Brian Browning Shot Dead by Brave Security Guard in Dramatic Church Attack Foiled in Wayne

WAYNE, MI — A violent attack was narrowly prevented Sunday, June 22, 2025, at CrossPointe Community Church when an armed suspect, identified as 31-year-old Brian Browning of Romulus, Michigan, was fatally shot by a church security guard before he could enter the sanctuary during a packed Vacation Bible School service.

The dramatic incident unfolded just after 11:15 a.m. at the church located at 36125 Glenwood Road. Approximately 150 congregants, including many children, had gathered for the special worship event when Browning, wearing military-style tactical gear and armed, approached the building with clear intent to cause harm.

Courage and Quick Action Prevent Tragedy

According to Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr., the attack was halted thanks to the swift actions of church members and security personnel. A deacon spotted Browning approaching the entrance and boldly struck him with a vehicle in the parking lot, disrupting the assailant’s plan. This critical intervention gave a trained, armed security guard enough time to respond.

The security guard confronted Browning outside the church and engaged in a brief gunfire exchange, fatally shooting the suspect. The guard sustained a gunshot wound to his leg during the confrontation but is expected to recover fully. No other congregants were harmed.

Chaos and Calm Inside the Church

Congregants inside initially mistook the gunshots for construction noise before security staff quickly moved to evacuate everyone safely. Pastor Kelly praised the congregation’s calm under pressure and commended the church’s long-standing commitment to safety, having maintained a security team for nearly a decade in response to rising threats nationwide.

Investigation and Motive Still Unknown

Authorities revealed that Browning had posted a cryptic photo on social media outside the church weeks before the incident, raising questions about premeditation. However, no connection between Browning and the church has been established, and his motive remains unclear.

Wayne Police continue their active investigation at the church, canvassing the area, collecting evidence, and reviewing surveillance footage. Police have urged the public to avoid the church vicinity while the probe continues.

Community Stands United

Despite the frightening event, the CrossPointe community is coming together, supporting one another through the shock. Pastor Kelly assured the public that leadership will implement a formal plan to help congregants, especially children, cope with the trauma.

“The bravery of our members and security guard saved many lives today,” Kelly said. “We are grateful for their courage and for the safety of our church family.”

Updates will be provided as authorities release new information.
