WAYNE, MI — June 22, 2025
A potential tragedy was averted Sunday morning when an armed suspect was shot and killed outside CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan. Authorities say the suspect was confronted by a church security guard, who opened fire in defense of the congregation, fatally wounding the individual before anyone inside could be harmed.

The incident occurred around 11:15 a.m., shortly after the conclusion of the church’s 10:45 a.m. worship service. CrossPointe Community Church is located at the intersection of Glenwood and Newburgh roads. According to the Wayne Police Department, a man armed with a firearm approached the church while congregants were still gathered inside and outside the building.

Witnesses described a tense and terrifying moment as the suspect fired a weapon near the parking lot. A pickup truck reportedly tried to block the suspect’s path when shots were fired. In response, the church’s armed security team sprang into action.

Police confirmed that one of the church’s security guards discharged their weapon, fatally striking the suspect. First responders were quickly on the scene and declared the suspect deceased.

A bystander suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg during the incident and was treated by medical personnel. Authorities have not released the names of either the suspect or the injured individual, pending further investigation and notification of next of kin.

“The security guard acted swiftly and with incredible bravery,” said Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong. “Their quick response likely saved many lives. This could have ended very differently without their actions.”

As police cordoned off the area and began processing the scene, services at the church were suspended, and members were evacuated or kept in secure locations. Michigan State Police and the FBI are assisting with the investigation, including reviewing surveillance footage and gathering witness statements.

Pastor R.J. Francis of CrossPointe Community Church addressed the media Sunday afternoon, expressing his gratitude that more lives were not lost.

“Our hearts are heavy, but also grateful. What happened today is something no pastor ever wants to face. But I thank God for our trained team, for law enforcement, and for His protection over our church family.”

The motive behind the suspect’s actions remains unclear. Investigators are currently working to determine whether the individual had any prior connection to the church or its members, or if this was an attempted mass shooting that was stopped just in time.

The church announced that counseling services will be offered to anyone traumatized by the incident, and a community prayer gathering is being planned for later in the week.

Wayne Mayor John Rhaesa released a statement shortly after the news broke:

“The City of Wayne stands with the congregation of CrossPointe Community Church. We are grateful for the courageous response that protected so many lives this morning. We will do everything possible to support the church and ensure our community remains safe.”
