Texas Manhunt Intensifies for Angel Gomez Montanez, 21, Accused of Killing Roommate Over Unpaid Rent in Harris County

HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A widespread manhunt is underway across Texas for 21-year-old Angel Gomez Montanez, who is wanted for murder in connection with the fatal shooting of his roommate, following what authorities describe as a heated argument over unpaid rent.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Sunday, June 22, 2025, at an apartment complex located in the 12000 block of Greens Parkway, a residential area in north Harris County. Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire around 3:30 a.m.

When officers arrived on the scene, they discovered a young man, later identified as 22-year-old Alejandro Rivera, lying unresponsive in the apartment’s living room. According to authorities, Rivera had been shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

Preliminary reports suggest that the two roommates had been arguing about rent and living expenses for several days, with the confrontation finally boiling over into violence. Witnesses heard yelling from inside the unit moments before the sound of gunshots pierced the quiet neighborhood.

“This was a senseless act that escalated far beyond a financial disagreement,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez in a public statement. “The loss of a young man’s life under such tragic circumstances is deeply disturbing. Our priority now is locating and apprehending the suspect before anyone else is harmed.”

Investigators say Montanez fled the scene immediately following the shooting and is currently evading capture. He was last seen driving a dark gray 2017 Honda Accord bearing Texas license plate RFX-2197. Law enforcement agencies are working to gather surveillance footage from the area and interviewing neighbors and potential witnesses in an effort to retrace the suspect’s movements.

Montanez is described as Hispanic, approximately 5’10” tall, weighing 160 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He may be armed and is considered dangerous.

A warrant has been issued for his arrest on a charge of first-degree murder. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is collaborating with the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force to assist in the search. Officials believe Montanez may still be in the Houston metro area but caution that he could attempt to leave the region or state.

Neighbors expressed shock at the deadly encounter, saying the roommates mostly kept to themselves. “We would never have expected something like this,” said one resident. “It’s just heartbreaking — over rent.”

Rivera’s grieving family is pleading with the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the capture of Montanez. “Alejandro had his challenges, but he didn’t deserve to die,” a family spokesperson said. “We need justice, and we need this man off the streets before someone else gets hurt.”

Crime Stoppers of Houston is offering a reward for information that leads to Montanez’s arrest. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling 713-222-TIPS (8477) or through the Crime Stoppers website.

Authorities are warning the public not to approach Montanez if he is spotted, but to contact law enforcement immediately. Harboring or aiding a fugitive can lead to serious legal consequences.

As the investigation continues, Harris County residents remain on edge, and officials are working diligently to bring closure to the Rivera family. Anyone with information, no matter how minor, is urged to come forward.

“We will not rest until this suspect is in custody,” Sheriff Gonzalez said. “The community deserves answers, and the victim’s family deserves justice.”
