ST. LOUIS, MO — A quiet early morning in the Kingsway East neighborhood turned tragic as police responded to a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a man near one of North St. Louis’ most traveled intersections.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the incident unfolded around 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, June 22, 2025, when an on-duty police officer, stopped at a red light at the intersection of St. Louis Avenue and North Kingshighway Boulevard, witnessed a man suddenly stumble into the roadway and collapse. The officer quickly sprang into action, providing immediate medical assistance while calling for emergency medical services.

Despite those efforts, the man was later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Police say the victim had sustained at least one gunshot wound. As of Monday morning, the man’s identity has not been publicly released, pending notification of next of kin. Authorities have also not yet disclosed the exact location where the shooting occurred, or whether it took place near where the victim collapsed or elsewhere.

The Kingsway East neighborhood, a historic area of North St. Louis, has long been the focus of community revitalization efforts. However, like many other parts of the city, it continues to struggle with intermittent spikes in violent crime. Sunday morning’s shooting adds to a growing number of homicides being investigated across St. Louis in 2025, which continue to burden both grieving families and local law enforcement.

Detectives from the SLMPD Homicide Division have taken over the investigation. As of now, no arrests have been made, and the department has not released any information about a possible suspect or motive behind the killing.

In a brief statement, police urged members of the public to come forward with any tips or information that could assist in the case. “We are actively seeking any witnesses or leads that might help bring closure to this senseless act of violence,” the department said.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Homicide Division directly or to call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS (8477). Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.

Community leaders are calling for renewed urgency in addressing gun violence throughout the city and are encouraging residents to report suspicious activity and support local youth and outreach programs aimed at prevention.

As the sun rose on another day in St. Louis, investigators continued to canvass the area, searching for surveillance footage and potential witnesses who might have been in the vicinity at the time of the shooting.

Further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
