Chase Christman Sentenced to Life for Brutal Triple Murder and Arson in Ahwatukee Apartment Fire
PHOENIX — A 31-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to the brutal murders of three individuals found dead in an apartment fire last year in Phoenix.
On June 23, the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced that Chase Christman received three consecutive natural life sentences following his guilty plea to three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of armed robbery, and one count of misconduct involving weapons.
The horrific incident occurred in July 2024, when the Phoenix Fire Department responded to reports of smoke coming from an apartment in a residential complex located in Ahwatukee. Upon entering the unlocked apartment, firefighters discovered the bodies of Merissa Honeycutt, Samuel Lott, and Anthony Frederickson Ceccarelli in a bedroom.
An initial report from prosecutors revealed that each victim exhibited signs of severe trauma, including gunshot and stab wounds. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell described one victim as having been stabbed nearly 30 times. Tragically, three pets were also found deceased due to the fire.
The investigation revealed that Christman, along with an accomplice named Dorian Rice, allegedly planned a drug-related robbery that led to the fatal assault. Evidence gathered by investigators included incriminating text messages, Christman’s blood found at the scene, and phone location data placing him near the apartment at the time of the crime.
In August 2024, a jury indicted both Christman and Rice on multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and armed robbery. Christman also faced charges for misconduct involving weapons, intentionally killing domestic animals, and arson of an occupied structure.
Mitchell condemned the attack as “a particularly vicious act,” emphasizing that Christman attempted to cover up the crime by setting the apartment on fire. She praised the efforts of the Phoenix Police Department and prosecutors for their diligent work in ensuring justice was served.
Christman’s life sentence brings closure to the victims’ families and serves as a warning about the consequences of violent crime. The case continues as authorities pursue charges against Dorian Rice.
