Off-Duty Suffolk County Police Officer Alexander Vargas Arrested for DWI After Striking Pedestrian Jorge Alfaro in Huntington

 

 

 

HUNTINGTON, NY — An off-duty Suffolk County police officer was arrested early Sunday morning after allegedly driving while intoxicated and striking a pedestrian in Huntington, officials said.

Alexander Vargas, 30, assigned to the Suffolk County Police Department’s Second Precinct and a resident of Babylon, was driving southbound on Carver Street around 2:30 a.m. when he struck Jorge Alfaro, 28, of Huntington Station. According to police, Alfaro was running westbound across New York Avenue at the time of the collision.

Emergency personnel rushed Alfaro to Huntington Hospital, where he remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Police have not disclosed further details about the extent of his condition.

Following the crash, Vargas was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated. The Suffolk County Police Department has suspended Vargas without pay as the investigation continues.
