Lightning Strike at South Carolina Lake Injures 20 People, Including 12 Children — First Responders Act Swiftly

 

 

 

DOMINION BEACH PARK, SC — A sudden lightning strike at Dominion Beach Park near Dreher Shoals Dam in Lake Murray, South Carolina, left 20 people injured on the afternoon of June 24, 2025. Among those affected were 8 adults and 12 children, all of whom were promptly assessed by first responders.

The incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. when a lightning bolt struck the water, energizing a metal cable attached to buoys marking the swimming area. Several swimmers and individuals holding onto the cable experienced electric shocks.

Emergency crews from the Lexington County Fire Service, Irmo Fire Department, EMS, and the Sheriff’s Department responded immediately. Twelve victims were transported to three local hospitals, while others received treatment on-site. Prisma Health reported that 15 patients were treated, with some admitted for further evaluation. Thankfully, none of the injuries were life-threatening, and all are expected to recover.

Authorities temporarily closed Dominion Beach Park for safety inspections but reopened it the following day after thorough assessments.

This event highlights the dangers posed by lightning, especially around water and metal objects. Officials urge the public to remain vigilant during thunderstorms and to seek shelter immediately to avoid such hazards.
